Dave Scott under the radar

Francois, you are correct, but how many guys are running sub 3 in KONA. All those guys are not currently running sub 3 in KONA last time I checked. Dave may be a stud at 50, but he’ll still have to haul ass to run sub 3. Any slight nutritional or pacing issue and he is going over 3 hours like all the pros in their prime, including the likes of Hellriegel, who has run 2:46.55 in 1996 (the last time Dave Scott went 2:45 in KONA) and went 3:02 last year.

IRONMAN HAWAII 2 OCT-1996 00:54:22 04:24:50 02:46:55 08:06:07 IRONMAN HAWAII 11 OCT-2003 00:50:47 04:38:53 03:02:58 08:37:46

there are 3 only that didn’t run sub 3 in Kona on this list (Ingo, Timo as he was dqed last year and Siegi) all the others did.

I don’t know about the run for sure, that’s a guess because DS didn’t do it for a while, I believe he could. But I agree it’s speculation.

The swim is a different story. Anybody can go and swim with Dave at the Flatiron Athletic Club in Boulder Colorado. You buy a punch card, look up the schedule and jump in the pool with The man.

My PB IM swim is 53min and Dave is WAY faster than I am, I’m not even in the same lane, he swims with Simon and doesn’t seem to struggle to keep up.

OK folks, forget about Dave Scott. If he shows up at KONA he’ll set the 50-54 age group record…

Let’s talk about his pupil Lessing. This man could be scary fast at KONA. He has won nice and at age 20 or so, he went toe to toe with Mark Allen at Nice, only losing the final few K. No one went toe to toe with Allen in Nice. The last time Lessing raced Nice he beat Van Lierde and Peter Reid, who rounded out the Nice 1995 podium. Can he be on par with guys like Reid over the full Kona Distance ? I certainly think so. I guess we’ll learn this fall !

I ran that half in Moab and met him. I agree he is a great guy and super approachable and open. I know he was suffering with some injuries and mentioned having some issues. The race was also really hot for March. I don’t know what it was at the start but it did hit the mid 80s and that made it a bit tougher than people anticpated for a March race. I talked to him that night and he didn’t seem real happy with the performance, just my reading between the lines.

He’ll be my pick for the 2004 HIM.

He’ll be top 3 or drop out, he won’t be racing for top 10 that’s for sure.

Agret, I am assuming that you are talking about Lessinig gunning for podium or droppinig out, not Dave Scott
.

I ran about 10 miles with Dave on a training run a few years ago. As we were standing around yakking with each other and others who were on the run with us, Dave takes his shirt off and I am looking at the guy and thinking - this man is NOT 47 years old - he seems to be permanantly preserved somewhere in his early to mid - 30’s

Indeed, hard to believe that he is 50. If he does race IMH this year I suspect that the 50 - 55 age-group record will be put well out of reach for a very long time.

I guess we’ll learn this fall !
Where is he going to earn his slot?

He is the man. He doesn’t need to earn a slot, he has one forever!
You win, you have it for a lifetime, I guess he could life for a couple lifetimes and still go without quali. And then, since it’s Dava Scott, he might.

Here’s a nice article on Dave. He was planning to run the Boston Marathon this year, but has bagged it due to the bursitis and inconsistent training.

Uh, I meant Simon Lessing. I agree w/ your sentiments on Dave, though.
