…up in Appleon WI. It was to have been a “full” half-ironman, but the chop in Lake Winnebago was strong and the long course was shortened to about 500 meters. He was first out of the swim, had a 2:23 bike split for a very windy 56 miles and then ran 1:24 for the half marathon, complete with a very large stairstep climb in the first mile. I was there doing the short course and we were able to see him in the swim and transition and my wife and I were 5 feet away as he started the run and watched him take on that climb without ANY DROP IN PACE. It was something to see that kind of fitness in a 50 year old. He was second overall in the half. I don’t know if he has made up his mind for certain about Kona, but my guess is he could give it a real go in October.
For the bike lovers: He rode a Griffen with very staright forward VeloMax spoked wheels.
My first race of the year…and my lack of run training due to this calf was very evident…a long way from being able to match Dave’s pace for even a mile!
I talked with him after the race and we got massages at the same…he was a really nice guy very humble for being such a legend. He was hanging out with everyone after the race, signing autographs and taking pictures.
It was nice to see that even the legends of our sport haven’t grown into the ego maniacs like most other sports…
Beautiful day for a race and a great half-ironman course…even with the swim shortened!
That water didn’t look too bad until it was actually go time…man, those swells!! Not to mention all the crap that the wind blew in. That would have been on HARD 1.2 miles! Great bike and run courses though…loved the cross-country parts of the run! Did you think the run course might have been a little short?
The word is, or at least what I’ve heard is that he (Dave Scott) has ties to one of the local triathlon clubs in Appleton. I’m not sure if he has friends, or coaches one or more of them, but that is the relationship I have been told. Granted, I could be completely off about this since I’m not from the area.
With respect to Victoria’s, yes, they are still around. At least there are two of them in Green Bay and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is one or more in Appleton as well. Now if only IM destination cities had Italian food like that. ;o)
Victoria’s is indeed still there…I also had dinner there Saturday evening and turned in my best run on Sunday. I think Bucky’s got a point…must be something in the sauce!
