OK, I know this sounds stupid, but I read the bio on editor Dan E. that appeared in one of the triathlon journals recently. He was fired and started this website. It’s a wonderful site and I’m so glad he did start it, but how does one earn a living off a site? Are there that many ads here that pay to be? Or is he independently wealthy? Any ideas?
I think he’s doing OK, nobody will get rich in triathlon but one can make a living. When he was at QR we were adversaries, but there was mutual respect as well. So when he started the site, I e-mailed him that we would advertise on the site until the end of time. We don’t make a cost-benefit analysis whether it is worthwhile to advertise here (unlike our approach to most other advertising), we like the site so we support it. I think several advertisers here are like that, they have been on the site and figure it is a worthwhile site for the sport. So he’s got a steady base of advertisers, enough to spend plenty time training, undoubtedly more than when he was running a bike company.
Now if somebody else wants to buy a bike company, I can start a website too ![]()
Gerard.
He FOUNDED the company he was fired from AFTER taking a large enough chunk of $$ in selling it off in the first place. He was fired for telling the new owners he didn’t like the stuff they were doing with the company. . .
Slowman’s ultimately a genius. He made enough $$ to enable him to live the life many of us would die for. . .dabble in the biz when it suits him, pursue various personal projects related to his hobby (starting up FIST, Slowtwitch, etc.), and just generally be a professional triathlon shit disturber.
He’ll probably give us some song and dance about how it ain’t what we think its cracked up to be and we’ve got it all wrong, but he ain’t foolin this TriBri. . .The man lives in a place called Xantusia for cripe’s sake!
Gerard:
Just so you know what you are getting for your advertising dollar, I have this short story for you. I started back into triathlon last year. I started looking for a new bike this past winter. Around that time, I found Slowtwitch from another web site with training articles and proceeded to the ST treasure chest of articles on training. Meanwhile, my bike search wasn’t progressing well as I didn’t know what to look for. Then, I found the ST bike guide article which pointed me to the P2k and to the Cervelo website. My wife (a non-rider) made the argument for the P3, which was easy enough for me to agree with. I bought the P3 this past February. Very nice bike by the way, rock solid on handling, picks up speed like a demon on downhills. Rode 90 miles on it last Sunday very comfortably, but I am digressing.
I suppose I would have figured out the Cervelo reputation if I had found the forum first, but I didn’t come across it until Dan started posting his Virtual training camp results in March, and I searched it out. Then I found out Cervelo’s reputation on this forum. I figure I fit in here quite naturally.
Bottom line is I think I am proof that advertising on ST is definitely a worthwhile investment for you and Cervelo.
Thanks again for the marvelous bike.
P.s. I have contributed to the Get Tibbs a Cervelo (P2k or P3) fund a while ago. I was so happy with mine, I figured I should share the wealth. While it seems rather dormant at the moment while Hid is figuring out the TSR clothing details, I am still hoping to see a Cervelo in Tibbsies right hand and your restraining order in his left hand sometime soon.
