Damaged Specialized Transition frame

Hi,

I have a small question, as you can see the pictures on the link below. So I manage to damage my frame during the first trip with the new disk wheel.

The question is, can damage be so great that it is dangerous to ride on the frame?

Does not feel like that the material would be so weakened by the small damage. the mark/damage is only a few mm deep.

Better to be safe then sorry

Thanks and cheers from Sweden.

It looks like it’s only paint and clear coat damage, but best have your local bike shop check it out to make sure the rub is not too deep. From my limited point of view, it looks fine.

It’s unlikely that the carbon would actually rub off from the tire. A crank or chain can do serious damage, but inflated rubber is not really up to the task of taking down the CF. If it was, you’d probably be seeing some splintering or other delamination.

Yeah that happened on my wife’s Transition a while ago (at least a year ago); she’s been riding it ever since and it’s fine. Purely cosmetic.

I haven’t seen a transition over 2 years old that didn’t have some of that going on.

I don’t get it, how can people be accepting that as normal?

often times it’s user error by backing out the limiter screws too far. then you get tire rub and your paint goes away.

so it’s not solely a Specialized design problem but rather it applies to all tt bikes?

I don’t know, I’ve not owned all TT bikes…yet. But if you want to send me a few to test out, I’ll not complain.

Sure thing, let me talk to Lance and see what I can do.

All I know is that this is the first I’ve seen of that happening and that makes the decision all the more easier, Trek Speed Concept.

Speed concept would do the same thing if you got the rear wheel in too far.

Chris

I had a feeling my ignorance would soon betray me yet once again.

So the set screw limiter is a TT design found on alot of tt bikes and I’m taking it because of different wheel sizes as the OP said it was his first ride with a disc wheel or just for how far the wheel sets in? I’m having trouble wrapping my head around why there is a need for set screws in other words on TT bikes.

yes

that is a minor issue…Every TT frame with horizontal drop out need adjustement screw as depending what tire you use… 21mm, 23mm, brand, etc…they all are different size and will rub on the frame without adjustement… so it s really a simple thing to figure out when you have the frame in front of you. Will happen with any frame and it s really a none issue. Every cervelo, p2-3-4 have those little tire rub also…

Thanks for the help.

Im i glad that i don’t have to buy a new frame =).
