Daily H2O Intake

How much water should a pretty average triathlete be consuming on a daily basis?

Until recently I was never really in the habit of drinking much water before a workout. I can’t help but notice that drinking at least a liter per day helps the ol’ comfort level while training, especially when it comes to running. However, I don’t really have a good feel for minimum/maximum/optimal intake. Thoughts? Experiences?

Oh, and if it matters, I’m a dude, occasional(bashful smile) drinker, 5 foot 11 and 63/64 inches, about 180 lbs.

Also, I eat oatmeal. Not sure if that matters.

I drink about 3-4L/day.

Also I’m not sure if you know, but you may be the only man in the history of men who says he’s 5’11.

Rule of thumb: 1 L baseline, plus 3/4 L per hour of exercise.

What’s 63/64 inches?

I drink about 3-4L/day.

Not true. I used to lie about my 5’ 10 1/2" and call it 5’11. But I’ve gotten older and the bones are settling so I’ve resigned myself to 5’10.

As for the water, drink till the pee is clear and forget about the numbers.

I also a dude. 5’10 190lbs. I have a Nalgene 32oz bottle I fill up about 4-5 times an 8 hr shift. When I have beer, Depending on how much, I do a NUUN before bed. HEHE anti-hang over tablets.

I think he’s saying he is 5’11" and 63/64th of an inch tall.

63/64 inches is .984375 inches.

Like mentioned earlier instead of say 6’ he wanted to make it more technical.

Drink up… I’ve also heard that drinking to much water can be bad, something about a loss of electrolytes… I mix in another water based drink… gatorade, juice drink…

63/64 - I see. Awesome!

I drink ~128 oz a day (4 liters) while I’m at work, then another ~20-60 at home or during workouts, just depending on the workout for the day - so pretty much anywhere from 150-200oz a day. I’m weird though and drink more than most. I do have friends that drink less than 32oz a day - NO idea how they do that.

I was recently diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and have been told to keep my water where it is and to add 5000-6000mg of sodium a day. Not fun!

To the “heavy drinkers” - do be mindful of your sodium intake. I was taking less than 1000mg a day easily before my recent diagnosis. The RDA is 2000-2400 mg a day for a regular joe schmoe. My low sodium intake was not the cause of the POTS, but certainly was not helping the situation.

Sorry, I don’t mean to belittle your condition, but I do think it’s pretty AWESOME that you can like, TRIPLE your pickle intake for the day.

I’d be eating pickles like it was going out of style.

Which begs the question, when exactly did eating pickles come into style?

Sadly, I hate pickles. I used to throw a fit at Jason’s Deli when I was little if they put a pickle on my plate and any of the juice got on my “girl” cheese.

Now, if POTS required me to increase my sugar intake to 5-6 times what I was previously having, I’d be all over that! I’m just not a salt person, and when I do eat salt it makes me want sugar that much more!

I drink when I am thirsty. Works great.

water is a red herring
=)

I do the same…just looks like I may be thirstier (am I making up words?) than your average person…turns out to be lots of water I drink a day. I usually don’t go 20 minutes or so without it and am never without a water bottle.
