I’m having a problem with my DA bar end shifter and hope someone has had this seen this before. I replaced the shifters and cables at the begining of last year and had no problems for a year and half.
My problem, for some reason when I shift through the gears the shifter ‘jumps’ 2 or three at a time. I have to use very very little pressure to get it to move just 1 ‘click’ and then, it seems like it is missing some of the index ‘clicks’. 9spd rear derailer is dialed in and i’m sure its not that.
Is there something to the shifter that gives it a good ‘click’ each time it indexes? is there some adjustment? It just seems like it is missing some of the index stops.
Sounds like they are just worn out? Replacing cables and such every 18 months is not good. I replace mine every 6 months and there is a definite change in performance.
Chances are, if they were working for a year after you replaced the cable, you didn’t install them incorrectly…
Those shifters are really sensitive to dirt/grit. I’ve seen this happen a lot, and is one of the reasons I run mine in friction. Take the shifter apart and spray it with WD-40 to clean it, then spray it with a teflon lubricant or drip in a really light oil, and it should work fine.
When you take the bar end apart to change the cable, there is a round piece (like a wide washer) with four indents, that the actual paddle fits with. This piece has one correct orientation, but can actually install 3 other ways. It’s also responsible for your indexing stops.
My advice is to take that shifter apart, and take a careful look at that washer. (on the tech manual, this is the piece with the comment box “set so that the projection faces downward”). Then put it all back together - without a cable - and go through the shifting range. You will see the impact that each of the four orientations has on the shifting and the indexes.
Exactly. 10 out of 10 times the funny shifting by a bar-end is because of the washer rotation.
That might just be it… I’m sure I installed it correctly last year b/c I had no problems with it. I suppose I forgot to mention that I removed the ‘lever grip’ so I could tighten the body of the shifter last week. Sounds like I may have not payed attention to the orientation of the washer when I threw it back together… guess I’ll find out when I get home. Many Thanks!!
