DA 9 & 10 Chain Rings

Does anyone know if they are interchangable?

Thanks

Everything I have read suggests that they should be compatible. The rings use the same bolt circle, so no problems there.

To make the new 10spd chain, my understanding is Shimano didn’t change the roller width, but did some fancy things with the side plates to make the chain thinner.

I’ve just been too lazy to crack out my new 10spd rings and mount them up on my old 9spd gear to be sure (been running 55-42 and decided to get 53-39 as well, hence the new rings). If I get bored enough, I might do it this weekend just to be sure I didn’t waste my coin on the new rings.

Thanks Andrew - does anyone else have any info?

Thanks!

The bike shop that I had my Trek TT built through said that you can interchange the BB/crank arms between DA 9 and 10 no problem. As for what I have seen about the chainrings, the answer is no. I think I saw that at R&A Cycles and in Triathlete Mag. R&A has on their site what can be used for both. DA 10 is simply awesome. It shifts like a million bucks. Maybe Tom D. can ring in on his thoughts on this subject. He is the bike man!

Okay… didn’t wait until the weekend. In the interest of providing an informed answer, I cracked out the new rings, and installed them tonight. And the verdict is…

They work. Fits, shifts, makes the chain turn the cogs and thus the rear wheel…

Now, that said, shifting performance might not be completely optimal, but I didn’t adjust the cables for optimal shifting, and I haven’t always enjoyed super-crisp shifting performance with the front friction thumb shifter…

Also, the five points where the chainring meets the spider (not sure what they’re called) are a bit wider on the new 10spd version than they were on the old 9spd. No problems, just doesn’t look quite as perfect as it does on the new crank. But, you’d have the same problem (just the other way around) if you were using the old triathlon rings (54-42, 55-42 or 56-44) with the new cranks, as Shimano hasn’t announced a new verison of those rings for the 10spd version. Someone sufficiently motivated could probably refinish the rings to be flush.

The finish doesn’t match the old crank either but… the new rings were a cheaper upgrade than the full new crankset and the performance of the old cranks was more than adequate.

Long answer to a simple question, but there you have it.
