Are the 7900 chains and casettes arecompatible with 7800s?
the 7900 chain is only compatible with 7900 components: http://www.shimano.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/us/index/tech_support/tech_tips.download.-Par50lparsys-0025-downloadFile.html/01)%20Drivetrain%20Compatability%20Chart.pdf
.
ShimaNO staying true to form made sure that nothing works with nothing…
thanks!
I have 7800 bar end shifters, and 7800 FD/RD, with 7950 compact crank, 7900 chain, and 7900 11-28 cassette on my tribike, and it works fine. the 34/28 combo is great for hill climbing and 50/11 gives good top speed.
Not sure if that helps.
50/11 gives good top speed.

If I’m going fast enough to spin out 120+ rpm on 50/11, I might as well slow down and rest a bit.

Slow down??? Yesterday I was in my 53/11 wishing I had more to go faster.
I have no idea if the new chain is compatible with the old group, but I wouldn’t take Shimanos official word for it. Shimano is notoriously conservative when recommending cross compatiblity.

Lol, wow.
I especially dig the web address.
With that 50/11, the site should be “spinfastbyanymeans.com”

that Shimano chart posted is old.
if you search the intertubes you’ll find a newer one, but the bottom line is that most of the stuff is interchangeable. The only things that aren’t are the 7900 front shifter and front derailleur.
The cassettes are the same spacing, the cable pull ratio and parallelogram geometry of the rear derailleur has been the same going back to 8 speed. I’m using the chain on 9 speed and it works great. I’m also using the 7900 shifters with an 9 speed derailleur and it shifts great as well.
7900 chain is compatible with 7800 components. That is what I have and runs flawless. Installed and recommended by LBS. FD and RD is a different storyy. Cassetts, some are some are not. I belive up to 11-25 is ok. passed that not.
I’m running a complete 7900 set, including cassettes on training and racing wheels but I ride sometimes an older rear wheel with an Ultegra cassette and I have no issues at all.

Funny and all, but 50/11 (4.545) is a higher gear ratio than 53/12 (4.4167).
Sure, 53/11, would be even faster, but most standard double cranks come stock with a 12-25 cassette.
I’ve been using a 7900 chain on a 7800 cassette for the last 200 miles with no issues at all. In fact I find the 7900 chain shifts a lot smoother and is a lot quieter than the SRAM Red 1090 chain I was using previously.
I’ve run the 7900 chains on bikes with 7800 and 6600 series Shimano components and they all work exceptionally well.

The mechanic at my local, high-end triathlon-only shop had no qualms using a 7900 chain on my otherwise 7800 drivetrain when I brought it in for a tuneup. It shifts as well as new. Crisply and quietly. Flawless
