Cyclocross Pedals and Shoes

I just ordered a Gary Fisher Presidio and I need pedals and shoes. I just want to say that I have read all of the previous threads on this topic and there is no clear answer (and I dont expect one) but I would like to see what people like for what I am doing.

I am going to be using the bike mostly for winter training in Western New York, but I am also planning on getting in on some local (Rochester area) races and maybe travel a little for an ECCC race or two since I am a college student.

For pedals I have heard good things about Time (all they guys in my shop use them on their mt bikes), crank brothers, and shimano. I am looking for something at a good price (I dont need what the pros race on and dont want to spend a lot to shave a gram or two).

And for shoes I was wondering what people recogmend. I can get employee pricing on any Bontrager shoes, but I have never ridden them. Are any shoes better suited than others for cx? (I dont expect to see a lot of racing in the mud as many races are early in the season).

Thank you in advance.

Time is the standard. Crank Bros typically work about as well and are cheaper. Shimano is good too but you don’t see much of it, as it’s not quite as good as the first two.

Shoes are pretty well shoes. Get something that fits and accepts toe spikes. The only thing that doesn’t work very well is the 2008 Shimano top of the line shoe. The instep is all carbon and people were sliding off the pedal.

I, personally, like a shoe with a buckle as velcro comes loose when wet/muddy.

For price and simplicity, get some Crank Bros Eggbeaters or Candy’s. Hard to beat.

The Shimano MTN pedals/cleats are nice to, but usually a little expensive.

Shoes? I have some expensive Time shoes and some old, suede Shimano MTN bikes with ties/velco that I use more
