I went on a ride about a week ago very early in the morning, so I had my cycling glasses on my helmet for the first hour or so of the ride. When I put them on, I almost immediately felt tension in my neck and forehead just above my eyes. Took the sunglasses off and the tension was gone. The only thing that I can think of is that when I have glasses on I look up differently for some reason. It is very odd and I would love some other thoughts.
Probably the upper frame of the glasses gets in the way of you looking “up” to see the road, so when you have the glasses on, you have to tilt your head up more to see. Just a guess.
Last week I was riding on the Silver Comet Trail. They were mowing along the side and apparently stirred up a nest of yellow jackets. I rode right through a swarm. My hands got the worst, but they were pinging off my helmet and at least one hit my glasses. The swelling just went down a couple of days ago.
I wonder if anyone with this experience has actually found a pair of glasses that takes away this feeling then.
I found a pair without an upper frame and it helped a lot.
I was using the Oakley Pro-M, and had similar issues. I got some of the Arlon’s from Nashbar, and they work pretty well. And the bonus is they’re cheap, so if something happens to them, I won’t lose much sleep over it.
Not sure, but I would say I always wear something to protect my eyes. Lots of debris on the roads, really easy to get something in the eyes.
I actually suffered a scratched cornea a few years back because of that. It was the only ride I had gone on without glasses, and a small rock managed to get in there.
Whatever disconfort you may feel: it is worth it! A month ago I ended up at the eye doc who’s first question was: do you work in a machine shop? (had a nice shiny piece of metal stuck in my cornea.)
What if I just squint the whole time? I just ordered a pair of those Nashbar Arlon glasses for $14.99. For that price, I figured it would be worth the investment sight unseen.
Definitely with glasses, can’t count the number of times I’ve had things ping off my glasses, worst was thin thorny branch, kinda like a vine that just happened to be sticking out into the road right at eye level, caught it directly across my M-Frames at about 25mph… scary, went back and snapped that thing off before it blinded someone else. Caught a ton of branches across the face mtn biking yesterday but that’s a different story. Plus there is the whole UV protection aspect as well.
Experiment with glasses. I’ve had similar issues and it’s usually either a) the glasses obstruct your vision in a way that you have to compensate a bit with a different head position which causes issues, b) glasses don’t stay on correctly so again you compensate to either keep them in place or something like that, c) glasses don’t block wind effectively again causing you to compensate
I use Oakley Radars and absolutely love them. Work great for me in the aero position, minimal sweat obstruction issues compared to most other glasses, sheds water and crap so I can ride in the rain with them on while others around me are having to take their glassess off, and jsut fit great. Also personally had good luck with Racing Jackets for cycling. Then the Zero’s while there is no frame to get in the way let too much light in so I was always craning my neck up a bit more to block out more sun and wind… those didn’t work for me but others love them. Just try a few pairs on, borrow friends etc until you find a pair that works.
I wait in anticipation as you ponder whether to tell me the brand name. K-Mart?
Jeff
Sorry- there are a number of options at many price points that I looked at, but I picked up the Nashbar Arlons, which I see you’ve ordered. Hope they work for you!
A lot of safety glasses and shooting glasses can be picked up in different colors pretty cheap and you can try them on for fit. (I have a bulbous head apparently and many glasses do not feel right but this genera does fairly well at fitting.) Easy to get orange for the spring and clear for morn/dusk time.
Like others have said, you may want to look at different glasses. I have found only two brands that don’t give me a headache with long periods of wear, not saying there aren’t more out there but I have only Oakley and Rudy Projects to work for me so far.
I have become an eye protection nazi over the years. A few years ago a good friend managed to jam a screwdriver into his eye while trying to open a door that the door handle fell off of. All turned out well for him, and since it was on a call we screwed with him endlessly (he recieved the purple screwdriver award). After getting vomit and the end of an iv cathter (the plastic part that had just been riped from a patients neck) I started to wear eye pro all the time at work. After taking a branch in the eye hiking I now wear eye pro whenever I am biking (road and mountain) and running on the trails I even carry a pair of clear lenses to change out if I think the conditions are gonna change (like a late afternoon ride).
Training and racing multisport can be dangerous and partial that risk is what makes it fun for many… but good eye pro is light and comfortable and something as simple as a large insect can take an eye out a risk not worth taking considering the protection is SO easy to wear
Has anyone ever tried Rain-X or similar to shed the sweat off. I wear glasses but have to remove them within the first hour because I am drenched as is anything that I bring to wipe off the glasses.
