I’m in the market for a new pair of cycling shoes. My current pair are Shimano TR02s, but the sole is a little cracked and one of the cleat bolts is pressing into my foot. I’m convinced the bolt is the reason for some foot pain which has kept me from running. I thought I did something to my foot while running, but I’m now convinced it was due to my cycling shoes, but that’s another issue.
Anyway, at this point I’m more concerned about finding something comfortable. I figure I can deal with an extra strap or two that closes in the opposite direction of my current shoes if it helps my foot feel better. I’m wearing a size 12 or 45ish depending on the brand, if that matters at all.
My question is do pure road shoes tend to feel better than tri shoes? If they do, that’s probably where I’ll end up. If not, I’ll look into another tri shoe.
the most comfortable bike shoes i’ve owned have been mountain bike shoes (w/spd cleats/pedals). it’s extra weight that you’re spinning around, though.
that said, there’s ‘uncomfortable’ and there’s ‘screw going through the sole and digging into my foot.’ it’s not always easy to find a pair of shoes that are comfortable for 6 hours straight pedaling. but you should be able to find shoes that don’t have screws digging into your foot.
I’ve had both, and really haven’t found the tri shoes to be any less comfortable than the road shoes. I now ride tri shoes 100%. But that’s just me. Might depend on the particular models you’re looking at…
Some cycling shoe mfgs use the same last for their road and tri shoe. Personally my feet fit well in Sidi, and just purchased their T2 after using their road shoe for years. So far so good. The only difference is the uppers.
