Cycling shoes that the tongue doesn't cut into your ankle

I am in desperate need of cycling shoes that the tongue doesn’t cut into your ankle… I thought my Shimano R106s were the ticket… but they still cut into my ankle wven when they are looser than I would like. I have tried on Sidis, bontragers, mavics… what else is there? Does anyone else have this issue?

For me the tongue on the Sidis bends up and out of the way. Since it’s a solid piece of synthetic leather you could always cut it down a bit.

It seems like it’s the to ratchet strap that’s the real issue not the tongue…i should have mentioned that.

The shoes with BOA fasteners might be just the ticket.

You could try shoes which don’t have a tongue at all, I use the Bontrager HiLo RXL. I’ve ditched my regular road shoes as for me, they are the most comfortable, also great with or without socks. Only issue is the front of your feel get a tad cool on the chillier days with the no tongue but toe covers fixes that.

Strangely, without issues last year, my Specialized boa shoes cut into my ankle on my first sockless ride this year. Perhaps it was just because it was the first sockless ride, but damn it was annoying the next two weeks…even with socks since it cooled a bit again.

I have both the Specialized tri specific shoe with no tongue that I use for sock less rides and triathlons and a pair of Specialized road shoes featuring the BOA. I’ve never ridden sock less in the road shoes. If you are worried about riding sock less I would go with one of the tri specific shoes without a tongue. The Specialized versions are very comfortable without socks.

So I have the trivent experts and I am actually thinking about switching out of them. No totally because they go into my ankle, but the top strap (I think) digs into the top of my foot and presses nicely on one of the tendons (?) that leads to my pinky toe and the one next too it. Which causes this strange feeling that the toes are rubbing together. I am not sure if someone else has had this problem, or even can relate to this. It only happens on my left foot, and I have no problems with my older road shoes. I have tried loosening straps and tightening them as well. Just something to think about I guess.

I have trimmed or added slits to the tongues to several pairs of Sidis and it has always worked for me as well. David K
