Cycling shoe vs running shoe size

How far apart are you cycling vs running shoe sizes?

In dress shoes, I am usually a 10. Sometimes a 9.5, sometimes a 10.5.

My running shoes (Mizuno Elixir with a custom orthotic) are 12. I have also worn these in a 12.5. My previous pair of Brooks Adrenaline’s were a 12.

My last 2 pair of cycling shoes were 45.0. This equates to an 11 (I think). They have felt slightly large and I have often wondered if I should be in a 44.5.

Earlier this week, Bonktown had Lake CX211C tri shoes for $69.00. They have 44.5 and 45. I went with the 44.5. They feel a little snug, but I have not ridden in them yet. Gonna give them a try tomorrow.

Edit: I have the CX311c, not the 211. Damn fat fingers.

In dress shoes I wear a 10. In running shoes I wear a 10.5. In cycling shoes I always wear 43.5. It’s snug but perfect for every manufacturer I’ve tried.

But that’s the weird thing. The way manufacturers convert european sizes to American sizes seems inconsistent to say the least. For example, the tag on my Specialized 43.5 cycling shoes says that the US size is 10.5 however both the tags on my Mavic and Sidi cycling shoes (also 43.5) say the US size is 9.5.

I’m a 10.5 running shoe, 10-10.5 dress shoe. I have relatively skinny feet.

I had been riding in 44.5 Pearl Izumi bike shoes with an extra insole. Last month I tried on several new bike shoes with the help of my LBS, and wound up in a pair of size 43 Bontrager. Apparently my bike shoes have been too big for the last three years, because these feel great and eliminated my numb-toe issues. All the other “smaller than I thought I needed” bike shoes felt better, too.

FWIW, my Birkenstocks are also 43.

I just bought a pair of Lake CX211 on ebay for around a 100 bucks. They are supposed to be one of the best bike shoes you can get. Anyways, the shoes haven`t arrived yet so I can’t say how they’ll fit. I just hope they are more comfortable than the Shimano tri shoes I bought ten years ago that were too tight in the toe area. I know bike shoes are supposed to be tight, but I think you still need some toe breathing room. Let me know how the shoes work out.

I took them out for a few hours today. A little snug, but I think I can get used to it.
If Bonktown puts them up again, I might pull the trigger on a 45. They seem to have a pretty nice return policy.
