I need new cycling shoes. I typically use an MTB shoe since I use them for tri racing, mtb and commuting as well. I also do not clip my shoes into my pedals for T1 - I prefer to wear my shoes through transition zones.
Any recommendations for a lightweight shoe that is easy/fast to get into that I can also run/walk in? I was thinking something like the specialized s-works mtb shoe, but the lacing systems looks tricky.
thanks.
Those shoes are awesome. The lacing system allows you to easily adjust the lacing through a shoe cover too, if you ever race a tt.
I have a pair of the S-Works MTB shoes (from 2009 i think) and I am mainly happy with them, but a few issues that may not make them
a great option for you.
- I find them hard to put on, could cost you a few seconds in T1, but also can be annoying if you are using them as a daily commuter
- My Boa dial/knob thing is wearing out on one shoe. I ride in pretty rocky areas, and I think this is trail damage combined with grit in the
works. but they’ve been used on average probably 1 time a week for 2 years. Not a great durability record.
- Super Stiff soles. A mixed blessing for sure, but if I am riding someplace with hike-a-bike, I’ll take my comfy old Dominators.
Using the same shoe for commuting and racing will lead to compromises… so maybe these are a good middle ground. Personally I have
been very happy with my Specialized TriVents at about $150 for racing. Easy on. Easy off, very stiff and as I have found on some super hot days,
the white color keeps my feet cooler than a closed, heavy, black shoe.
