I’m very new to endurance sports and only just started cycling several months ago.
I’m wanting to pursue both cycling and triathlon events and was wondering if it would be best to do cycling only for a few years and then get into triathlon at a later stage or to do shorter triathlons now and get into longer ones later.
I would like to do an ironman race in 5+ years and was wondering what would be the better route for building a base of aerobic fitness.

If you love both then do both. If you want to win choose one.
5 years is a long time and should be plenty if you are new to sports…if not you should be ready after a year or two depending on how much you put into it.
Go and try both, you’ll know if your able too as your body will tell you. I road bike and do TT’s as well and love them both. Wish I had more time to enjoy them more.
In the early 80’s I started bike racing overlapped with running races and triathlons. When I first started out I did mostly criteriums, TT, 5k’s and 10k’s. Then I started doing longer bike races less running races and more triathlons. Just say I had fun with it. I think the natural progressing of become more fit with more endurance lead from shorter races to the longer stuff. Back then I pretty much raced every week. Sometimes two or three times a week with crit racing. Cirt racing is a blast but be prepared to loose some skin.
