Cycling in Black River (MO) area? OR, Good Places to Ride in the Southern Midwest in March

Anyone familiar with the area? How are the roads?

Curvy, hilly, lots of trees, little/no shoulder.

Perfect for cycling until a drunk redneck going 25mpg over the speed limit comes around the corner.

So you’re saying it’s a bad idea…

Any recommendations of better places to spend a week in the spring in the southern midwest?

Aren’t you in Minneapolis?

If so…hook up with the Silver and head to North Ark/South Missouri. www.silvercycling.org

The course for Tour de Missouri should be released soon. Perhaps follow that route…

Otherwise, I’d head the extra miles to GA/TN, visit Herbert and watch the Tour de GA.

That’s a good idea. I’ll check to see when they are going (I have to go the second week of March).

I’ve spent time around Little Rock and Jack Mountain in the spring before, and the riding was great. I was looking for something similar, but not quite so far. Do you know exactly where the Silver guys go?

bump.

I grew up in Southeast Missouri and can honestly say I wouldn’t choose that area to ride a bike for safety reasons.

Spend a little more time on the road and get to N/S Carolina or Georgia. There is some great riding here and the weather isn’t that bad in that time of year.

Most roads through the national forest are paved in have little traffic. West Plains has a Chiropractor Last name Dixon. He’s a good triathlete. If you get to Rolla e-mail me .

Try Fayetteville, AR.

great cycling (choices of terrain)

South East, South West, where are you thinking? I live at the Lake of the Ozarks(south central missouri) and we have some rides that are pretty nice and on decent roads. One is on Sunday mornings and that way we share the road with the Amish buggies. I’m sure there is tons of tourist type info online about the area,; tons of shopping, typical hill-billy entertainment, on a popular lake with some wonderful homes and boats in the beautiful Ozark mountains. Its pre-season march . Following the tours route would be fun.

The goal is to drive the shortest distance possible from Minnesota to find tollerably warm weather and real climbing. Jack Mountain area north of Little Rock was good, but I’d like to find something similar closer to home.

The hills around here are steep but short; I’d guess some of the longer ones are 1/2mile - 2/3mile long. In St. Louis there’s the same type hills; one park (Babler State Park) that has great hills but they’re not that long. In March the weather is dicey, may be warm or cold.

Check this site out. I’ve ridden in the Kansas City area (near Longview) during the winter. They have a good group of cyclists. It’s pretty cold, but I’m sure better than Minnesota.

Bumping this for last minute suggestions. Anyone?

Need to finalize plans soon.

.

Anybody know if the Tour of Missouri route has been released yet? (I can’t seem to find it via Google.)

DON’T QUOTE ME ON THIS, but I remember hearing or maybe reading that they start in Columbia, go south to Springfield or Rolla, skip the lake area, Jeff City, cross 70 and then go north to like Hannibal or somewhere then conclude in St. Louis. Who knows how off I am but this is how I heard it.

Theres a hIM at Innsbrook on Saturday so I’m planning that as my A race and then see the finish in St. Louis on Sunday.

i live in Rolla Mo. We are very close to Fort Wood. There are many great roads through the national forest. You can ride 80 miles and see 5-6 cars. They are usually very polite. Route 66 bike shop is great. www.route66bicycles.com They have a road race in May. You could ride the course or many other routes. PM me if you want

No but it will soon. KC—springfield—Branson?—labanon—Columbia—St. Louis is what I hear
