Cutting Vision Tech aerobars?

So I got the Carbon R-bend aerobars and cut about an inch off of one of the extensions. When I tried to insert the Sram shifter it was stopped about a cm short because there is a raised edge inside the tube. Am I doing something wrong here?

The raised edge makes a complete circle in the inside of the extension.

I have a solution for you

Jagwire shifter mounts. the mount around the outside of the bar.

saves you a few grams too

I went through this issue when i cut down my vision bars. As far as I know you have 3 options.

  1. File away the inside of the extensions so that the Sram shifter can fit.

  2. The bars should have come with a set of shifter adaptors for this scenario - use these on your shifters and they should fit perfectly.

  3. As the previous poster suggested, use the Jagwire shifter mounts. You may even save some weight

FWIW I went with option 2 as I was worried about causing any structural damage to the carbon from filing it down. However, I think many people on ST have down this without any issues. Good luck.

Get the Jagwire and life is a lot easier and better. I actually used a dremel to grind out my extensions and it worked nice but I decided to get the Jagwire mounts anyways in the end. I was able to pick them up for $35 and they do save weight which is a must for me.

Happened to me as well. Cut about an inch, went to insert shifters and ‘oh crap’! Decided that I wanted to ride the next day, took out a file and went to work. Spoke to my local LBS about it and they said they’ve done the same for some people.

Ha, I read through the intructions which didn’t mention those adapters but sure enough they were in the box. Problem solved!

do those jagwire mounts add any overall length to the extensions? (i.e. if i put them on, would i need to cut some length off my aerobars to keep the shifters in the same place in my hands?)

They seemed to keep them in the exact same place for me. Didn’t have to adjust the cable housings at all, for instance.

I just ran into the same issue with my Bontrager extensions last weekend. A trip to Home Depot to buy a $5 file did the trick. I talked to my LBS after the fact and they said it was a common thing to do.

Those are single bend extensions right? How much length were you able to cut off of the end of the extensions? (including the addition of the Jagwire mounts)

These are the new Lazy S-bend from Hed and I think I cut off 1.25" off the end and then cut off 1.5" off the backend.

They do not add any length at all.
