I’m new to duathlon, though I’m reasonably fit. I’ve been training with weights for quite a few years and I suppose I’m probably stronger than most endurance athletes - I can do 5 chin-ups with 30kg added to bodyweight, bench press about 110kg, and deadlift around 150kg. I’m 6’0", 172lbs (78kg). Should I keep training with weights or cut them out for a while to lose weight?
I should probably add that I’m now only training with weights 2x per week for about 30min apiece. I’m training for 10k/40k/5k duathlons.
Strength training helps, but only to a certain point… Don’t add too much bulk as you will have to lug it around the course…
I lift in the off season, I tend to add too much bulk (to go with the already acquired bulk).
Can you say “BOWFLEX”???
Actuall I cannot. I cannot pronounce the letter X. Its tragic really.
no need to cut out the weights just change the program to increase your strength endurance. cut the load down to 30-40% of your 1 rep max and do reps for time say 3 minutes per set. 1 set should do it per exercise. chose multi joint exercises. another option is in season try using rubber bungees, great for long sets and easy to travel with.
I live to please my wife & she appreciates my doing weights. She does not want me to look like a Tyrannosaurus rex
It’s not how fast you go, it’s how you look that matters ![]()
If all of your other training is optimized and you have time for it, I don’t think it can hurt if done responsibly. I personally don’t do any weights. I do a 45 min routine of stretches/balancing excercises (from “The Egoscue Method”) every day plus Gordo’s core routine twice a week.

Depends upon your goals. It is not possible to pack both the maximum number of contractile elements and the maximum number of aerobic proteins and capillaries in the same muscle at the same time. One must focus on one or the other (if one wants to maximize those aspects) or look for a balance (what most people do).
If you are trying to maximize your duathlon performances then you should stop the weights and lose the unnecessary weight. If you don’t care if you come close to winning but like the other things lifting gives you, then keep it up.
