Wowsers! Thumbs up from Mr. Demerly and King Bunnyman. Thanks guys. The funny thing is both Tom and Bunnyman were part of my inspiration for this project as well.
The current position lowered my elbows about an inch, which should be faster. I mean my knees are higher than my elbows at the top of the stroke.
I think i’m going to send a pic or the link to Peter Fraiman (sp?) at VT.
Bunnyman----following your lead, I’m going to keep tweaking “normal” crap and turn it into custom works of art. Possible future projects include carbon elbow “cups” which would help with shock absorption and weight and look cool.
Is the paintwork chipping a common problem with Vision Tech’s ? I love my bars and have not felt the need to get the hacksaw onto them yet, but they are 6 months old and look about three years old they have so many chips, would an aftermarket paint job solve this ?
Seconded. . .Holy Crap RVW! STFU Already. You have ZERO evidence to even begin to add any veracity to your jab. I’m not saying you are right or wrong. Just that there is ZERO evidence either way. Hopefully he’ll report back on the actual results of his changes. Now go back to whatever dark, dank hole you from whence you reek forth. . .I suspect there might be an Oran Utan there to keep you company.
Don’t call me, call John Cobb - or at least read the tips he provides before you go whacking off the upturned ends of your VisionTech bars. They are, after all, not adjustable - so don’t you think they studied this issue in detail before settling on their final design?
provide a link to what youre talking on Cobb’s tips…btw if you look at the first pic before i cut down the aerobar extensions you can see that they are bent due to a hefty crash that put me in the ER after the race. They were going to be scrapped because of this reason, but instead of throwing them away i tweaked them. Its not like I took a brand new pair of VT’s and cut them back.
Jan Ullrich rode faster than I or you will ever ride in the TdF '03 on a pair of Walsers not much unlike my new pair of VT’s with short extensions and his forearms on the rests.
.
And just because a company makes something the way it does, it doesnt mean that that is the most effective shape----look at a 1994 pair of flourescent green Profile bars to know what i mean.
in the end though, theyre mine and i like them, despite what RPV may say.
RVW, JC is NOT the end-all-be-all of all things cycling aero. There are others out there who think a little outside his box, and guess what. . .their ideas work. Total drag of a rider is a COMPOSITE number of a ton of variables, and STILL doesn’t completely define a particular rider’s performance capability. The bottom line question here is “will he be faster?” You cannot simply dismiss it off the cuff because it goes against your sharply defined box of what is RIGHT and AERO. By that standard, we should have handed Armstrong the long TT in last year’s TDF because there is NO WAY Ullrich could have been faster with that position. Be careful of leaning too hard against the cardboard sides of your rigid little box, RVW. It might collapse and send you out into the real world.
Disclaimer I am not knocking JC. He has and will continue to push the cutting edge of cycling products. But even he finds new information from time to time that slightly contradicts his previous position.
Speaking of the three angles of Vision Techs, don’t forget their massively bladed all-in-one drop bar/stem combo that was out about ten years ago. The thing had to weigh about a ton!!!
I didn’t say that , if well-executed, they wouldn’t be a sprinter’s dream bar. The gram freaks probably were the ones who led to the ultimate demise of the Vision Tech drop bar.
If you follow Mr. Cobb’s posts on the Bicyclesports forum, you would notice that Mr. Cobb steers away from making absolute statements. For me, an Ulrich-esque puts less strain on the shoulders, gives me better leverage on the bars, and allows a lower torso position. I don’t have a wind tunnel in my backyard, but I would be stunned if I am any faster with standard aerobars than I am with my homemade straight ones.
You don’t really know anything about any position until you have tried it and tested it.
Wow,that was some really nice work. I am impressed. Read how you put it together. The look of the end product was great. Thanks for showing the shot of how you look in the aero position too…
Super awesome job Jeremy. Makes me look closer at the set up I have and make me wonder…hmmmmm. Have to see if my creativity is up to the task. Fantastic paint job too…damn.
Can someone tell me, why every shot of self-positioning or new component with rider - picture, shows the person in question almost naked?
I’m not sure if I need to see this. I know we are all somewhat narcistic but that’s a little much isn’t it?
It wasnt that im an exhibitionist or anything, the importance for me was to see the angle of my chest----i have read the chest angle (ideally flat) is more important than the back being flat. Due to the fact that you can change (by adjusting) the flatness of the chest but you cant change the curvature of the spine (without some major surgery or something.)
And yes I could have put on a really tight jersey or my skinsuit but it was like 11pm when my gf took the pic so i really didnt think about showing my chest to the world.
