I’m definitely not a bike mechanic…I just ride them, so I hope I’m not asking a stupid question.
I’ve got a 2002 Zipp 404 front. It’s only got 24 spokes. I’d like to turn it into a rear wheel (Shimano drivetrain) but I can’t find any production hubs with less than 28 holes. Does anyone have any experience with getting something like this custom-made? I only weigh 145, so I don’t believe I’d threaten the integrity of the wheel.
You sure can. I am sure that there are many non - Campy ShimaNO hubs out there. I am sure someone will post about a hub you can use. I used to build 16 spoke front wheels from 32 hubs…they always were nice. You may end up with less spokes, but at your weight that should not be an issue.
American Classic Hubs will work and available several spoke drillings and any Bike SHOP can help you with the spoke length meaurement depending on whether you lace it radial or radial non drive and 1x the drive side or then could build you the wheel. How many miles on the rim?Don’t want to use it on rear if it has many miles on it.
If you noticed on there I capitalized Shop in there. The better shops will use Bike-a-log which does the measure ments for you.Just type in all info.So much better than the old days when we used the charts.I hated all the meaurements just to get a mesurement. Spokemaster Rules!!
Shimano Dura-ace hubs are available in 24h drilling via special order. They also appear on ebay from time to time (that’s where I got mine). There new 10s Ultegra hubs are supposed to be available in 24h drilling too, but I’ve never seen a pair in real life.
If you’re running Campy, your’re probably out of luck. I think their hubs only come in 28 hole and up.
