Currently suffering from Cabin Fever - but is there a cure?

I’m currently on my annual break (I get a lot of holiday) from teaching and am now lifeguarding down on the beach. The weather here is awful and by the end of the week my chess game is going to be flawless. There’s only so many open water swims I can go on before the grey skies bring you down…and it’s nearly August. I envy you guys in sunnier climes…

Did you get a swim in yesterday? We managed a 4.5k swim in some wierd on shore flat sea with large smooth rollers in the face on the home leg. Very strange incredibly clear light making visibility excellent and appearing to bring objects considerably nearer.

Here’s one of those “It could be worse” replies. How about this for cabin fever?

I spend my whole life right now in a space about 10-12 square miles in size that I can leave. The temperature has varied between 105-120 degrees each day and the low is about 90. I have two loops I can run; one takes 20 minutes and the other 40. Not much to see though since I’m running next to a fifteen foot tall wall topped with razor wire. And then there are dust storms …

My bike hasn’t arrived yet and when it does I will have one 30-minute loop that I can do until I’m tired of it. There are actually two pools in the palace here (one of Saddam’s late sons I believe) thought they are both empty.

Of course, I am thankful every day to be here because I could be out in the country, dodging bullets and rocket-propelled grenades while people try to blow me up with improvised explosive devices. Or I could be on a ship like a friend of mine who told me last week she ran 15 miles on a treadmill. Uuuugghhh. Shoot me now.

OK, just kidding. I lived in Dunkirk for four months, just across the channel and know how depressing the weather can be in that part of the world. My bike was always coming up rusty and I hated the wind. And the rain. And the cold too. It was much better when I was able to travel to the south of France. That’s what I would recommend.

Chad

Hey Chad, I just spent my lunchtime on the beach with Bryce, and it is grim today.

What he fails to mention is that we have had five continuous weeks of glorious uniterrupted sunshine. Unfortunately for him the change in the weather coincided with his starting work on the beach.

C-est la vie!

Any chance for travel? Even a short get-away will break up the routine. We have a heat wave here that broke today. It has been 80-90 everyday but storms moved through last night and brought a new weather sysem. It is 61 here and raining now.

The poor boy only came back from a break surfing on Monday! He is now tied to the beach to draw down his second income whilst being paid during the Uni holiday!

Hard life, huh?
