I just broke my coffee maker to day and found an old thread and saw what was recommened in the price range I was willing to pay.
Ended up getting a Cuisinart DCC 1200 tonight. I see it has both a gold filter basket and paper filters. Does anyone know which is best or could you use both? I’ve never had one like this before.
do I still use a medium grind on my burr grinder? Thats the drip setting on my burr gridner?
Not familiar with that specific model but here goes.
I’d use the gold filter. The paper ones are basically just one and done. Kind of a waste if you ask me. Gold filter gets used over and over. Just rinse and repeat. Every so often use some hot soapy water on the filter.
Use your standard grind for a dripper. If the filter clogs up your grind is too fine. This is unlikely to happen.
Where I live the we have hard water so once in a while I’ll run some diluted vinegar through my machine to get rid of calcium deposits.
By good coffee. I would NOT recommend “fair trade shade grown”. That stuff usually tastes like ass.
use the metal filter. the flavor of coffee comes from the oils you get out of the brewing. when you use paper some of the oils are absorbed hence you lose flavor. if you become an uber-snob like my wife, but not me of course ;-), your grind can vary with the humidity. the dryer the finer you can try. with humid air if you grind to fine it will compact to much to let water through, think of mud. i know with our espresso maker the grind makes a huge difference in what we get out, with your machine i really don’t know but it’s something to try.
plus the metal is more green. if you’re interested in that.
Re: Grind - I had to play around with the grind a bit, certainly makes sense to go up and down a few notches to see what gives the best results. (mine doesnt have a “drip” setting just numbers (1-45 I think))
Re: Filter - I usually stick a paper filter in the gold filter. the gold filter allows more sediment so the last few cups can be “muddy”, and its more of a PIA to clean up. Definitely less green, but…
Also, there is a button on the front (at least there is on mine) that says 1-4. the purpose is that it will get the water hot before brewing, which is important on small batches so you dont get cold coffee. I think that they figure with bigger batches it “evens out”. Anyway, I always press that button as it doesnt make sense to me that you would start the brew with “cold” water.
Hey patf, it’s only been 3 years and 3 months since you asked your question about the Cuisinart Coffee maker. Fortunately, your thread has been resurrected. But, I gotta ask, in the 3 years and 3 months since you asked the question, have you got this figured out yet?

Chuckle. If you gotta ask, you gotta ask.
Still making coffee everyday. Being lazy I use brown paper cones which is just neater.
