Cryotherapy - Does it work?

Apart from draining your wallet, wondering if anyone has regularly used Cryotherapy. They had this at a race and I tried it…couldnt tell it did anything, but then again…it was one time.

I am talking about the places that put you in a stand up tube and use nitrogen gas to expose you to -220F temperatures. There are all sorts of claims they make of how you will benefit.

Has anyone tried it and what are your thoughts? I know there are articles that ice baths prevent adequate recovery, perhaps the same issues pertain to this.

I tried once and didn’t feel much of a difference. I know some swear by it. Have not done too much research on it but might be a placebo effect for some.

Did it work for Walt Disney?

Look up the role of inflammation in adaptation.

Ha… I actually included the story of my one-time experience, here:

It was interesting and I’m glad I tried it for the novelty factor, but I don’t think I’d pay $40 a pop for treatments.

I don’t see how the body experiences anywhere near the temperature (or lack thereof) claimed in these things. As anyone who has had the misfortune of a cold burn from temperatures significantly higher than the above can testify, skin does not like anything that far below freezing. I can’t see how it differs wildly from an ice bath.

Cryosurgery

had it done several years ago for plantar faciatis.
was last resort - it worked for me along with orthotics that were done at the same time.
I rarely use the orthotics now.

make sure you use a great foot doctor. I went to one of the pioneers - he has since retired.

recovery - I drove 2 hrs home - rented a automatic.
recover was easy, no meds or anything. just a little rest and back to starting running program again.

Didn’t work well for this person…

I’ve used cryotherapy only a handful of times, due to the high cost, but I definitely recovered faster than I normally would. It’s not a miracle cure all, but I found it to be useful if you have sore muscles and aches.
We have alot of cryospas in Dallas, so it is definitely gaining popularity.
