Have any other pyschocrossers run the Flexus and non-Flexus versions of either the Cubus or Primus? I’m just wondering if the Flexus versions are worth the premium.
Fro reference I’ve been running T30s and have been super happy with those for faster courses.
Except I can get the non-Flexus Tofu’s for $60 and the Flexus version for $90.
Dugs are still in the $120+ range, unfortunately these days that means it’s enough of a price difference to be hard to justify. Heck, I’m having a hard time justifying the difference just between the non-Flexus and the full-Flexus.
The non-Flexus Primus tire has a significantly lower thread count/less flexible carcass. It’s a stiff feeling/rolling tire.
With the Primus tread pattern, the Flexus casing is worth the extra money. It’s a great tire - in fact, it’s the best all-around tire I have used to date, and I have taken my Dugast Typhoon tires off and replaced them with Flexus Primus.
The Flexus Primus is really very much like a tubular version of a Michelin Mud tire - very different from the Flexus (non-Primus,) which is a great dry conditions tire, but pretty bad in any kind of wet.
The Cubus tire on the non-flexus carcass is actually quite good, and may be better than the Flexus version in certain conditions; the extra-stiff carcass makes it a little bit more robust and less likely to fold in really gloppy conditions with low tire pressure. This is actually pretty nice with the large knobs of the Cubus pattern.
The Cubus (non-Flexus) only comes in the 32 size, and the 32 version of this tire is really only “great” in deep mud; it cuts through very well, but doesn’t have the side grip to be as good an all - rounder as the Primus or the Dugast Rhino (it’s closest competition.) The Cubus is actually better than the Rhino in certain conditions, as it cuts through better and doesn’t clog up.
I use the 32 Cubus where I would otherwise use a 30 Rhino, the 34 Cubus Primus where I would use a 32 Rhino, the 32 or 34 Flexus Primus as an all-around tire, The 34 Rhino as a “wrath of God” tire, and the Dugast Pipistrello or Flexus (non-Primus) as a dry conditions or Ice tire…
Hope that helps,
M
Full disclosure; I’m a Tufo dealer, at least to the extent that I buy them wholesale and sell them to Athletes I coach and to friends…
