Critique My Training Schedule

Background: I am a tri “vet” with a few IMs under my belt and numerous sprint tris. I am toward FOP in age group in local races. I am competing in mostly sprints this summer with a local century race/ride in August and the Chicago Marathon in Ocotber. Bike is my strongest followed by swimming then the run is my weak link. I am a lawyer in a small firm and have a 1.5 year old. My wife is very understanding but I do not have carte blanche training time. Here’s my current protocol:

Mon: Run 45 min + swim 45 min

tues: brick intervals @ track

wed: EZ Run 45 min + swim 45 min

thurs: Ride 1-2 hours + 10 min T-Run

Fri: Hard Hilly Run (1 hr) + EZ swim

Sat: 3-5 hour Ride + 30 min T-Run

Sun: flexible/open/rest

Any thoughts would help tremendously

When you say run, do you mean you go out, and run for 45 minutes? Or do you mean that is how much time you have to run total?

Those are times I am actually doing/completing . . . not time available

Maybe a 2nd rest day in the week?? On Wednesdays maybe either run or swin, but not both??

what do you mean by brick intervals?
I interpet that as 5 k bike, 1 k run, decend the run times?
you also should think about some tempo/fartleg work… this is what i think (using your time constraints and how you have your week set up)

mon - swim (1 hour, pace work), run - 30 min ez
tue - brick workout (this would be a key/hard workout - ex (5*(4 km bike, 1 km run, decend the run times by 5 sec to 5 k time -10 sec)
wen - swim (1 hour), run 30 min ez (skip if feeling shitty)
thus - run (tempo work/or your hilly route), ride (pm) - 1 to 2 hours
fri - swim (1 hour)
sat - ride (long) + run (ez endurance)

sun - off

  • i realize that thurs is 2 1/2 hours to 3 hours of work… a bit long, but if you run in the morning it should affect you that much…
i dunno about intensities for swimming, most work should be working on pace work, with a bit of speed thrown in… (i.e. - mon pace work, wen pace, fri- speed)
this should correspond to weekly totals of ~9 k swimming, 25-30 k running, ~150 km biking?
    anyhow… hope it helps?
