Critique my position ... sorta

almost as funny as psycholist’s pic … but not quite

Tha frame has weird geometry…

Geometry is fine. It’s the seat that’s too high.

Are you kidding?! Bob/psycholist’s pic is an all-time Slowtwitch classic… I mean come on: he’s wearing underwear, slippers, his bike has no brake levers but enough tape to wire his house and the barn has more crap in it than one could think of storing in a barn…

Tibbs who? Bob is da man!

What are you doing?

Safety pins. Invented circa 1900. They have utility.

Anyway, you’re riding too far forward for a road/cross position. Also you need a longer, lower stem.

pinning was a rush job… i’d been course marshalling all morning, barely had time to warm up. of course i will concede that you’re right, though.

cyclocross race. i’d just attacked one group to bridge up to another… they were maybe 5 seconds up the road at this point, and i didn’t feel like having any more frontal area than necessary

Surly’s are cool though…

as far as the stem is concerned, i actually had been training and racing with a 110mm stem. i just never felt powerful in the hoods, and unless i was cornering or climbing, i was always on the hoods. i switched to an 80mm 4 weeks ago and felt waaay more powerful and comfortable. i corner better, accelerate better, and generally ride faster now. all due respect, but i have established empirically that i do not need a longer stem. (i have, however, been toying with the idea of lowering by a spacer or two … not till the off-season, though)

as far as the forward position… for road, yes it is far forward, and i’m not comfortable in this position after about 1.5 hours. however, my races are about 45 minutes, and they all involve lots of corners and mud - ie, accelerations and bursty power. based on everything i’ve read, as well as advice from more experienced training partners and intuitive knowledge of how sprinting feels in different positions, i like my forward position.

oh, how i wish that they hadn’t named their cross bike the “cross-check”. how i wish that i was riding a “karate monkey”. what could have more style than a karate monkey?!?

i too love surly

So do you want a position critique if it’s right?

mostly my post was a joke. i appreciate your input, though. i saw that one of my friends had taken a picture of me “time trialing” and thought, ‘i have to post this on slowtwitch!’

I don’t get too worried about the stem length or height on a cross bike because you’re changing positions so much, but in my opinion PaUlo is right about you looking too steep for cross.

I mean, it’s certainly not in the Dutch/Belgian Groenendaal or Nijs school of positioning…
