Critique My Position Please (2)

I have been working hard on my bike this year but still need a lot of work. Any help you can provide on my position would be appreciated. These pictures are from a sprint this weekend. I will be racing sprints to 1/2 IM this year. Thank you.

I want to thank everyone for the help!

Notice that I’m using pictures from outside so no one can harsh on my basement, the color my wife chose for the walls, my kids’ collective toy dump, etc.

Seriously, I’m relatively new to cycling and any help will be appreciated. I’m just amazed I managed to get the pictures posted!

lose some steertube if you are happy where you are at

not 100% on this, you will have to test it, but your arms do appear to be too wide. looks like they might even be wider than your hips/ you have a huge chute there sucking air into your torso, never a good thing.

that saddle is seriously pointed down, or so it appears in the first shot. that will cause some comfort issues and constant sliding forward. you ought to be able to level it out.

proportionately, your arms look much larger than your legs, maybe pedal with them

Your position looks very good (to me). If there is one nit I would pick, it would be with your elbow width. Looks pretty wide (although, it’s tough to really tell since the pic isn’t head-on). The rest looks really good, though. And, I like you P2C. That’s my favorite color scheme, and it matches your kit nicely.

Steve

I say it looks good.I have a similar position and it works well for me.
You look comfortable can you hold that position for 3 hours?

Usually, very comfortable; we’ll see never held it for more than 2 1/2 hours but have first 1/2 IM this year. Wasn’t very comfortable this week because I wrecked on my roadbike 3 weeks before (now I can never try to sell it on the classifieds and claim never wrecked!) and road rashed the shit out of my left forearm which was not quite healed.

I think that looks really good. Everything that follows is nit-picking:

In the first picture, I’d have said I’d like to see you try to lower your head more. But then I see the second, frontal shot and it looks like you’re doing it. I’d love to see a side shot from right when that second photo was taken. Man … it looks like you’re gettin’ it!

I agree with the other posters on the elbow width. Unfortunately, I know those bars you’re riding quite well. As soon as you try to narrow the pads, they’ll also start to come up off of the base bar. You’ll get narrower, but higher. Do you have any spacers you can remove to compensate? If not, I’d leave it alone.

I also agree with the comment about the saddle angle. It’s hard to tell, but if it is pointing down, you’ll be fighting to keep pushing yourself back. Make it level or, at most, 2 degrees down.

If that’s dialed in for you and typical of how you ride, why not trim the aero extensions an inch and put those shifters at your fingertips so you don’t have to reach to shift? Check out the photos in my profile. You’ll see how my shifter bodies are right under my curled index fingers and I can easily shift with a flick of the thumb or finger with no other body movement at all.

Nice job in my opinion. How’d you make out?
.

Bob,

I have the VT bars and I have mine as I told Phil in a PM, about 3mm apart at the stem. Removing the standard riser that come with them and they are about 1.5 mm above the base bar. Unfortunately I can’t get mine any narrower or I would to see the results.

He could also use a -17 stem to make up for the small difference.

Is that the smithfield sprint? I was there, actually rocking the same bike (w/o the fancy wheels, and probably not as good a position). Will we see your improved position at Bumpass and Kinetic?

Yes, Smithfield Sprint. I really like the SS although my wife thinks it is nuts that I drive so far for such a short event. Will not be at the Rumpass in the Bumpass (where is Bumpass? That has to be one of the better names for a triathlon) or the Kinetic but will be at Lynchburg & Bath County, maybe Smith Mountain Lake. If you are going to be at any of those events let me know so we can say hi.

Disc was my Christmas present to myself. Big poser factor but I love it.

But we could say things like “you need a tan.”

Not that I’m one to talk! I’m Cullen-vampire pale too.
