Cristian Bustos - modern pentathlete

Sheila T’s debut as a modern pentathlete was the subject of a ST thread last week. Today, I saw the actual results of that meet (the Pan American/South American Championship in Buenos Aires) for the first time - and noted that we missed the performance of another former tri star. Long-time IM star Cristian Bustos of Chile finished second among the men.

Christian was a scary fast marathoner and a top dog triathlete. I wouldn’t be surprised is Mark Allen lost a few night’s sleep thinking about the Bustos threat.

Didn’t know he picked up the pentathlon too. I wouldn’t mind seeing him and Sheila go head to head…

And I believe he’ll be racing in Kona this weekend too.

Sheila scored 5704 points in winning the women’s event, while Cristian totaled 5436, about 100 behind the winner (Eli Bremer of the U.S.). Depending on the sport, however, the scoring tables are different for the genders. On an event-by-event basis:

**Sheila rode (jumped, whatever) very well, knocking down but a single rail and going over the time limit by about 8 seconds; Cristian had a perfect ride.

**Sheila shot quite well, but Cristian was a little better.

**Sheila ran 10:04 to win easily, while Christian’s 9:08 still came up 25 seconds or so short of the winner.

Sheila’s swim time of 2:07 was about 13 seconds faster than Cristian’s 2:20.

Sheila won 12 of her 21 bouts in fencing (after losing 6 of the first 7 - she was very nervous). Cristian didn’t do quite as well.

Bostos really gave Mark Allen a solid run at Kona 1992. Its gotta hurt when you run 2:49 and get whipped by 7 minutes.

It is too bad that he had that horrible bike/jeep accident the next winter. Its almost like the Armstrong/Beloki thing. The best contentder to knock of the King is taken out not by a straight out hammering by the King of the race, but sadly by fate/accident.

Great to see that he is still battling it out at Tri and modern pentathlon.
