Creaking Litespeed seat post - Solution!

I’ve posted countless times of my troubles with the Litespeed Saber aero seat post creaking issue, it’s been a while but thanks to the folks at Litespeed I was able to find a solution.

When you remove the seat tube and seatpost collar, there is a black “tab” that extends up out of the seat tube at the front. The backside of the front half of the 2 piece collar rests on this tab, and this is where the creak comes from. You can actually make the creak go away when riding by pressing down on this area forcefully. A bit of grease right on that tab and on the inside of the collar does the trick. The creak comes back after a while, but not nearly as bad, and just need to re apply the grease.

Finally fixed that annoying noise. Thanks now I can ride w/ you again and won’t think it’s my hip anymore. I got back on the road bike today for first time since my surgery. Hip felt pretty good but the quads were worked. Hey, did you get a recent PM from me about the Campbell crash? Hope he is ok. Anthony.

You saved my sanity - what is left. I spent most of this week wanting to toss my LS in the woods due to the seat post creak.
At the end of todays ride my wife said…“Will you please fix that @#$%^&* thing!”

Slowtwitch and its contributors saves the day again!

Thx,

Mark

What kind of grease did you use? Would Phil Wood work or do you need a specific grease? I’m having the same problem with an aluminum post going into a carbon frame and its really pissing me off.

I used something that has been in an old tool box for 10+ years…label is completely worn off. It did the trick.

Careful…my seat post has been creaking for a month or so and today the piece that attaches to the seat rails literally gave out (i.e. not there anymore). Glad I wasn’t going fast and wasn’t far from home. I’m thinking the creaking was probably from a hairline crack in the metal and don’t know if I would have been able to see it but I would double check your bike.

I would use Phil Wood, or even temporarily Crisco Shortening. I would NOT use automotive grease as it is designed for higher temps and can have some nasty chemicals in it that can possibly pit aluminum and eat the resin in carbon. If you have a light household lithium grease that is more than fine as well. Years ago I heard a theory that it was not the grease that makes a creak go away - it is reinstalling the post clean and having the proper torque applied - we will never ever know.

One of the reasons I was so concerned was I had a creak in an older saber frame, turned out to be a crack in the ti. But since the creak never fully went away, I took advantage of my wife’s advice -“I really think its time you get a new bike.”. I only need to be told things like that once. :). Saber frame is sitting in the garage

Why would you not warranty it - unless you were not the original owner. But, if you know the original owner…they can warranty it. (Lifetime - you would get a brand new bike).

I warrantied the first one in 2008, which is when I got the new model with the problem seat post design. They would not warranty this as its not the frame that was the issue, besides they stopped making TT bikes which is what i needed anyway

Currently riding a planet x and love it

“lifetime” warranty wasn’t quite lifetime

Yep - cant stand ABG.

Anyone still own a Litespeed Saber? Any advice on the correct torque for the seatpost collar? or just wing it.

Also, does anyone recommend upgrading to the four bolt collar found on the Litespeed website?

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but i’ve got a Litespeed Saber that ive turned into a road bike…

Anyone still own a Litespeed Saber? Yes, I do.

Also, does anyone recommend upgrading to the four bolt collar found on the Litespeed website? I did it. It makes no difference.

Anyone know what tension the screws in the seatpost collar should be torqued to?
