Ok, looking for some of the more crazy stuff people eat on the bike (during IM or half) (yes, I am a little bored at work). Myself - last year at IM Louisville I was into Payday Candy Bars. This year I am going with Mini Snickers. I also have some mini NutterButters that I am going to throw in.
Only in training: dry bananas sent directly by family from Tahiti
.
When I can get it, my mom’s INSANE banana bread. I have thrown down an entire loaf of it back when I was doing long course races…'92 Great Floridian I put down an entire loaf on the bike and was still hungry!
Pop tarts, preferably cinnamon and brown sugar - they even come a handy waterproof serving pouch so they don’t get soggy in a jersey pocket.
Oh, and you have to get the frosted ones - otherwise they’ll dry your mouth out and you’ll have to choke them down!
On good days I eat store brand Nutra Grain cereal bars.
On bad days … I eat crow.
Oatmeal Cream Pies.
I once rode with a friend who put a tube of Pilsbury Cookie Dough in his jersey and munched on that.

Peanuts would generally be a bad choice for race nutrition. But otherwise I don’t consider candybars, cookies, or typical junk food to be a bad idea. You would want something easy to digest and primarily carbohydrate.
Mini snickers are a step in the right direction over Payday. Consider milkyway…it seems equally dense without the peanuts.
Hey! How about fudge? EXTREMELY dense carbohydrates.
Egg Mcmuffins

In Louisville this weekend I will be feasting on a full size Snickers bar out of T1, followed up by some GU and Chewy bars. For the second course (bike special needs) I will enjoy a fresh (but likely warm) bottle of Mtn. Dew and a Little Debbie apple pie. If special needs misplaces my bag, I will be stopping at the gas station up the road as they have both of those items. After BSN I will continue to fuel on GU and some additonal Chewy bars. This is a well tested strategy for me.
For training I enjoy large volumes of Rice Krispy Treats and Little Debbie Zebra cakes, and of course, Mtn. Dew.
And not that you asked, but the run is GU and a Mtn. Dew at run special needs.
Last year I wished that I had cash on me so I could stop at the gas station to get a coke. This year, I am taking a $5 with me.
Well, not in IM but one of my AR teammates used to eat cheese fondue from a foil bag. It’s basically cheese and white wine.
You were looking for weird.
I’ll be munching on goldfish crackers on race day, but my training ride favorite is to stop at the halfway point at some fast-food place and order a small fry at the drive-thru. They are surprised to see me roll up to the window on a bike, but some of my standard places have gotten used to it.
My buddy (who is from Australia) brings Vegemite on long rides. He swears by it, but personally I can’t stand the smell. He also is known to take assorted fruit/vegetables and eat them in the middle of the ride. Banana, tomato, whatever… it doesn’t matter to him…
I have put cofee in my aero bottle. and then later when I started getting thirsy I had water endurox mix bottles in rear xlab holder.
I once saw a guy eating 2 bagels, a cup of coffee and another bag of whatever in his jersey. I would have hurled after the first 1/2 of bagel!
I’m a big fan of the rice bar’s Garmin Chipotle uses, though I usually throw in some other things. Uncrustables are a staple. Astronaut Ice Cream once…
I’ve tried a camping tube full of mashed potatoes - it works pretty well.
Question - if you stop at a fast food window or convenient store during a race, is that outside assistance?

I heard that someone took his cell phone last year on the IMC marathon, called down to dominos and ordered a pizza. He got to mow down pizza in the last 5km.
I have gotten really used to my fries on long rides and I am not quite sure how to deal with it. I may leave some in my SN bag. They might be gross. I probably won’t care at that point, but if I’m having a bad day I might like my comfort food.
It’s not actually expressly forbidden in the rules, I don’t think.
how about one of these?
well ok. it wasn’t on purpose. but one of these did fall out of an
overhanging limb at a rather inopportune moment last week.
needs more salt.
As I said on the special needs thread, tortilla chips are a nice break from water-Gatorade-gel-water-Gatorade-gel. They’re somewhat fatty and high in salt. At IM Wisconsin in 2005, some dude in a State Street cafe asked if I wanted salsa. More salt, some nutrients from the tomato… and lots of questions about what the cilantro and peppers would do to me. Just plain tortilla chips, thanks.
I’ve never done weird food during a race but this year I’m going with rice krispy treats. I also like the milky way and pop tarts ideas. I’ve really developed a fondness for sports beans, too
