So today I got my brand new Orbea Diva Record. I also bought new Tri Sidi Shoes in White. So I take it for a ride and am really loving the way it corners. Then I am going through a corner at a pretty decent speed and there is water in a small concrete drainage gully with SLIME that you really can’t see. (I have NEVER heard of such a thing.) This slime is like ice, except that is is more slippery and my bike just slides right out from under me. I crash hard on the pavement and hurt my back, neck, leg, hip, foot, etc. I also have major road rash with blood and holes in my hip. ( I guess from rocks?) All kinds of people stopped to see if I was Ok with blood all over my hip and all I keep doing is looking at my bike and my new shoes. They keep offering to give me a ride home but all I wanted to do was test ride my bike and make sure it was OK. Finally, someone I knew stopped and made me go home with my back in the back of her car. She told me that I better get to a doctor because I was going to have a big scar on my upper thigh if I didn’t. ( I am a woman and scars are not that pretty there.) Anyway my bike seems to pretty OK, except for the wheel is a little scratched up. (I haven’t ridden it again yet.) But my poor Sidis are NOT white anymore. I guess I was actually lucky. After this happened, my friend who insisted on giving me a ride home, said that someone had just broken their arm at that exact corner because they had ridden their bike through that slime. Have any of you ever heard of such a thing? Should I report this to the city?
Also, what should I do for this road rash? It keeps bleeding through and sticking to my clothes.
i am glad to hear you are ok, that could have ended a lot worse for the bike and for you.
be carefull going through water like that, the first time i crashed was in something much the same as that and it happend before i knew what was going on.
Bummer. Glad you and the bike are OK. Maybe have it checked out by your LBS just to make sure.
Road rash sucks. The last time I had it I used the J&J stuff in the silver box too. You can leave it on for a couple of days at a time. Keep a close eye to make sure it doesn’t get infected.
… all I keep doing is looking at my bike and my new shoes. .
I know the feeling – last year I went down and ruined a $3,000 watch that I’d had for less than 12 hours (didn’t even think to not wear it on a group ride). My injuries weren’t the first thing on my mind; in part, I think, because I was in shock. After a while, however, it all starting hurting. And yes, road rash sucks.
The most important thing is that you are alive and, for the most part, well. In 5 years you won’t even think of your pretty white Sidis and it sounds like your bike is fine. BTW, by far the best looking female specific bike. Please tell me you picked the pink.
If you cannot see that the surface is 100% fine on a corner, ride with care…
There is a school of thought there are 2 kinds of cyclists - those that have crashed and those who are about to crash - whenever I crash I remind myself that it is inevitable and as long as I am OK, consider that it was a good thing to get the next crash out of the way for a while!
It’s not the crashing usually but how you land that causes problems!!!
Hey Victoria, sorry to hear about your crash. Nice choice of bike though! I’m glad you got offlightly, I am typing this one handed as I broke my collarbone on my writing hand so can empathise with you. With regard to the road rash keep it moist and under dressings, change them daily (just after showering is most practical) and use an antiseptic cream to speed the healing. They should be healed in around a week and you will minimise scarring this way too.
If it helps any, I once splintered a brand new Aegis into 20 pieces or so within a week of delivery. Move my nose to a new spot directly under my left eye, too.
Sorry about your crash, I hope you and your bike are okay. I did a similar thing 3 weeks ago only I wasn’t as fortunate as you. Although my bike, wheels, shoes, etc were all unmarked, I suffered a fractured pelvis.
so sorry to hear about this! that blows so badly; especially the road rash and trashed shoes. however, while it might not feel this way now, thank God no broken pelvis, like another poster suffered, or something even worse. (sometime later this line of thinking might make you feel better, but probably doesn’t right now).
hopefully your LBS will give a good going over to ensure the bike is fine.
if you need a pick me up, keep posting! you can PM me as well.
Im sorry. get the Johnson and Johnson new skin in the silver box. So sorry
I got the Johnson & Johnson in the silver box. But it isn’t called second skin. It’s called Advanced Care. Is this the right stuff? It says it has “faster healing”, “minimizes scars”, and “helps minimize pain”. It seems to be working, although it still burns it feels a lot better. It has stopped bleeding. Now it just has a clear pinkish liquid coming out of the wound. I believe it will heal fine. I think actually my neck and back got the worst of it. As everyone has already said, it could of been A LOT worse. Thanks for posting!

I have an appointment today to pick up a stretched tubular tire at my LBS. So I might as well take my bike in too. Unfortunately my neck now hurts enough that I have no desire to get on my bike and even test it out.

OMG. That REALLY sounds awful! I guess shoes and a scarred leg really aren’t all that big of a deal…
