Crash virgin No More…

After 3 years of cycling, it happened. I went down hard on my 4 hour tour today. And it was my fault.

Cruising at about 22 mph, about a foot or so away from the curb, I turn to look for my partner over my left shoulder… (I was in the Aero Bars)

Turn back around, and I’m drifting toward the curb now with only inches to spare.

… It’s one of those cases where you know that you are going to wreck, but can do nothing to stop the inevitable.

I used all of the body English I knew as my Hed 3’s started scraping the curb with a hideous sound.

There was no “life in slow motion stuff”

I hit the pavement friggin right now.

Simultaniously

-I landed on my right arm which was tucked up to my side.

-The right side of my cranium slammed the side walk.

-I heard my ribs crack.

and I lay there for a couple of minutes looking like a Granola bar with the breath knocked out of me.

Softride and Giro scratched but not too bad.

I’m lucky to have a well fitted nice helmet, or my brains would be in the gutter.

I’m lucky that there were no poles or signs in my path.

Ribs must be connected to every part of the body, b/c I can’t move anything without pain.

Road rash is cool.

I’m … an idiot.

glad you are ok. get some rest.

Wow that sucks. You’re not alone in the idiot department…many of us have been there. When I was in college, I was riding, sans helmet because they weren’t cool then, when I hit an unpainted speed bump at around 20 mph. I had my hands resting on the top of the bar, without my thumbs hooked below. Before I even knew what was happening, I was smacking the pavement with my skull and my bike was somersaulting away. I ended up with most of the skin gone from the right front part of my fore cranium and a goose egg that covered same. I was pretty appalling looking for about a week. I look back on that and I think, “dumbass”…

Spot

First one’s a doozy. I recommend the ice bath. 10 minutes. As cold as you can stand it. Repeat 2-3 times per day, if you can. Give yourself at least an hour between sessions. Best way to speed recovery… I crashed hard during a race. Did the ice bath several times a day afterwards, and, combined with rest, was back at full strength in under a week. If the ribs keep hurtin’, think about an x-ray. If you crash again on a fractured rib, you could puncture something, and that would be really bad.

Hey glad you’re OK man. The advice given above is good. You were lucky and you have a good attitude about it. And the best part is no concussion, and you aren’t laid up in bed

Now for the important stuff…HOW’S THE BIKE??? Just scratched isn’t good enough, we wanna know the dirty details.

“…as my Hed 3’s started scraping the curb with a hideous sound” is especially worrisome. This, people, is why you do NOT train on race wheels.

There are two kinds of cyclists…

You are now the other kind.

Sorry you crashed. Welcome to the club.

The first time I crashed, I had fairly respectable road rash. I walked into the LBS to buy something, wearing shorts, and all the guys looked at me, and one of them said “Dude. That’s nice 'rash”. Another said, “Gotta learn to roll, dude.” It was beautiful. Like an alcoholic at the frist AA meeting, I finally found brothers who understood.

Watch that rib. Injured ribs are nothing to sneeze at. I bruised a rib in high school years ago, and it still hurts at times. And yes, it does seem as though everything is commected to your ribs. Wait’ll you try to run.

You said it, my long Sunday run tomorrow is “right out”.

Softride …

both derailer’s scratched, but not bent. work fine.

handle bars scratched, hb tape schredded.

Right speed play scratched.
Hed wheels aren’t bad at all.
Everything is out of whack but … good!

… There was an idiot in our group ride today, buff, fast, tattooed back… rode shirtless and without a helmet.

How stupid can you be… I mean I’d be DEAD right now if I didn’t have one on today.

Thanks for the kind words… going to bed … will be sleeping on my back vs stomach for a while
