I’m planning on putting them on my new R3 frame that I just ordered. They are ISIS drive, not MegaExo. Any recommendations on a good bottom bracket? It seems ISIS bb’s are kinda hard to find. Also, it needs to work with Record 10 which is what I’m planning on putting on the bike.
Also if anyone has thoughts on ISIS vs. MegaExo and why I should or shouldn’t care about the difference.
well, if its an indication of how little I know, I didn’t really notice they were ISIS when I bought the cranks. I just saw the price and jumped on them…
“I think there’s a reason that the whole industry is moving away from the ISIS standard…”
Is this true, or just your opinion? Clearly you have Shimano and Campy doing their own thing, but what about the rest? Seems like the ISIS standard isn’t a bad one at all.
Not an expert, but I remember the talk being problems with engagement between the spindle and the cranks, and the splines being more easily damaged, but I could be wrong. I have a mix of MegaExo, Octalink, and square-taper. No problems with any of them. Who knows, if I had ISIS, I might not have any problems with that either.
ISIS was developed by/for companies that didn’t want to pay Shimano to use their Octalink system. There’s nothing wrong with ISIS. It solves the same “problem” that Octalink did; it’s better than square taper. (I say “problem” because some people insist that square taper really wasn’t a problem and that Octalink was another case of Shimano and the “planned obsolescence” conspiracy theory. Both really are better than square taper, by the way.) But, the new external bearing bottom brackets are better than any of the previous iterations - square, Octa, ISIS. So, there’s nothing wrong with ISIS, it’s just been surpassed by a newer and better method.
The advantage doesn’t have anything to do with bearing size. The advantage of ISIS or Octalink is that the interface between crank arm and b.b. is much more precise / secure. An ISIS or Octalink crank arm will never “wallow out”, which square taper crank arms have a tendancy to do over time.
