anybody has experienced this before. I have mild crank side (right side) beneath the medial side of my patella, very mild, pain. Doesn’t affect my running at all (so far). The right quads feel a bit heaver after my trainer workout.
Not looking for a diagnosis but just some experience and what did you do to resolve it?
My girlfriend just got a new bike and has the exact same problem… I had the problem when I first started riding and I switched to Speedplay pedals that have 15 degrees of float. If your current cleats dont have enough float or are too tight try loosening them or changing to something different.
I “think” I read that pain in the front of the knee can also mean your seat is too low, pain in the back can mean the seat is too high.
Hope this helps but I’ll be watching for any other suggestions…
i think the float is sufficient otherwise i would have it bilaterally. It might be that i have leg discrepancy. Strangely, when I go up the stairs there is just mild bit of irritation which is annoying. I mean i can tell the difference because my left knee is alright.
I experienced the same thing for the 1st time this past summer at Tour of Elk Grove, my first race in 7 years. It was a bit frustrating because I hadn’t had that pain before, even during training.
I resolved it by dropping my crank side heel a bit lower at the bottom of my pedal stroke, or at least what feels like dropping it lower. Dropping my heel to that position probably put it exactly where it’s supposed to be. When I was being fitted for my TT bike, the fitter kept telling me to level out my foot. Apparently, what felt level to me was actually not, toe pointed slightly down.
ALSO: I recently did the Competitive Cyclist Fit Calculator and discovered that one leg is about 1/2 inch longer than the other.
Not to nitpick, but isn’t there a crank on both sides of the bike?
Seriously though, I had/have something like this in my left knee. I would get pain just under the front of my knee cap while cycling, but I wouldn’t feel a thing while running. I moved my seat up just a tad, and, for now, it has gotten a bit better. I’m giving it a little time to see how I adjust to it, and then I may move it up a bit more if need be.
Sorry, I don’t have the exact number. I had decided I would raise it in small increments to find what worked best, so I only raised it by about 3 or 4 mm really. After a couple days this new height seemed to work pretty well, so I haven’t raised it again yet.
