I recently purchased a Redline Monocog 29er frame so that I’d have a little singlespeed/townie bike to bomb around on. (http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/FR403A00-Redline+Monocog+29Er+Framefork+Set+07.aspx)
I had been thinking I could throw some old Ultegra 6500 cranks on it and be good to go… boy was I wrong. Even with moving the small chain ring to the outer side of the spindle, it will not clear the chainstay.
How do I know what cranks will work with the frame? Can I buy a set of BMX Cranks?
Thanks in advance!
I have a 29er too…fun bike. Pretty much any MTN crank will work. The OE crank and BB just plain sucked…
See how much clearance you need (hold the cranks up, measure how much longer the BB spindle would need to be). If they’re square taper cranks, you can probably use a bottom bracket intended for a triple and get it to clear. They’re commonly available to at least 118 mm wide (about a cm bigger than the typical double 108-109).
Ok, that makes sense. Unfortunately I have octalink cranks/BB so I don’t think what you’ve suggested will work. I do have a MTB triple sitting around (no BB) but I guess I’ll have to measure it up to see what spindle legnth would be needed.
The octalink BB is available in 2 widths, I believe. You need the wider ones, I think it is a 118mm.
