Cracked Zipp

I have a cracked Zipp and I was wondering if it would be ok if I just taped it back together. Any thoughts?

err… NOOOooo…?!

where is it cracked? Zipp has a good crash replacement program. You can get a new rim replacement for circa $450-ish. It’s a real bargain. Get in touch with them.

more info please…zipp makes rims, stems, cranks, discs, etc. i assume you mean rim but which one, what kind of crack is it, and where is it located. a pic would help.

It’s either a defect or a crash replacement. Get it replaced. Don’t ride on it, coz carbon has a bad reputation for catastrophic failure…and you don’t want any part of that action!.

I have wondered about repairing carbon however. I wonder if there is actually a way to fix them (cracks etc) using the technology they use for repairing cracks in windshields? Thats a very runny epoxy type repair and the voids between the carbon fibres are epoxy, so in theory…

Carbon stuff is generally manufactured in an autoclave (just a pressurized low temp oven) so surely there would be a sensible repair available, or do I have to invent one?

Send me you unwarranteed cracked carbon bit’s and I’ll give it a go and see if I can work out a safe repair method

Umm, you can’t really see anything in that pic.

Common wisdom is that if there is a crack it is not safe to ride. From the look of the whee it is really old. Maybe the best thing to do is to strip the tire off and see how bad the crack is. Most of the structure of the rim is in the outer edge. If the crack is very minor and does not extend through the structureal portion it may be OK to ride, HOWEVER, carbon structures can lose most if not all of their strength when a crack appears no matter how small. So the question is, how good is your dental plan?

Honestly, if it is enough to worry you it is enough to turn into a coffe table. Zipp has a pretty good crash replacement policy if it is still in effect for a rim that old. I think I’d shell out the coin for a new rim.

BTW how did it happen?

I can’t tell squat from that photo either about where and how big the crack is.

Just FWIW, Calfee repairs carbon, including wheels (they will not repair cracks in the brake track area). I have had a frame repaired by them and they did a beautiful job. However, they aren’t cheap and judging from the photo, that’s an old 440 that’s probably not worth the repair cost.

I got my 440’s repaired by a guy who is a carbon expert. I am sure you could find someone there who is the same.

yeah, but only red or blue tape will work.

ARE YOU SERIOUS??? it’s broken, call Zipp and beg for crash replacement etc.
