I’m trying to plan out my 2012 race season, and would like to combine my first full-Ironman with a family trip. I have two kids, who would be 6 and 4 by the time Ironman Cozumel 2012 rolls around. Has anybody traveled to Cozumel (for racing purposes or otherwise) with young kids? It works out well as far as the calendar goes. We could leave the kids with Grandma and Grandpa, but I feel like they’re missing out when they don’t get to go with.
Any thoughts, resort recommendations, or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Cozumel is great for kids. We travelled to Cozumel a number of times when our kids were smaller. Chankanaab National Park has a great beach area and offers
snorkelling for all ages. It is a very easy island to get around. Good times!
Have stayed at both Iberostar and Occidental Grand. Both are kid friendly.
Great for kids, mine are 2 & 4. Last year, we stayed at the Park Royal, which had a decent kids club and nice (but small) beach. This year, we’re trying the Allegro, which appears to have a better beach. We’re bringing Grandma along to watch the kids for the day while my wife and both race.
Most all of the resorts are very kid friendly and somewhat all inclusive. If you are the adventurous type and want to venture away though, a bit different, but still much safer than the “mainland”

thus far, as long as you stay away from politics (i.e. live in politics), police (i.e. work as a cop) or narcotraficantes, the mainland is also very safe (Campeche, Yucatan and QRoo states). There have been very very few cases of mistaken identity hits here in QRoo and none in Campeche or Yucatan states and they were up in Cancun. Also, don’t be stupid, but that goes for pretty much everywhere in the world.
No reason to leave the kids home. take them with you. I have kids almost similar age as yours and have traveled with them to Mexico, Dominican Republic, and the Middle East and we are going to Cozumel this December for vacation for 10 days. They will remember these trips and thank you for them (maybe) but they won’t remember staying with Grandma and Grandpa while their parents having fun somewhere else.
I am also planning on IM Cozumel next year (we should hook up) and will be taking the kids. they will be 7 and 5. Will stay in one of the all inclusive resorts. They are great and have many kids activities. Plus you don’t have to worry about food which is a major plus when traveling with kids.
I think most resorts offer the all-inclusive package there. I am heading out there in about a month for family vacation and will be staying in the Iberostar: http://www.iberostar.com/EN/Cozumel-hotels/Iberostar-Cozumel.html
If we like it, I might just book there again. Not sure how far is it from race location and all transportation logistics to and from race. I would think the hotel will offer some kind of shuttle to race area. Maybe you guys racing in few weeks can offer some advise!!!
In 2009 my daughter was 6 and we stayed at Iberostar for the race. They had a large area of the pool that was shallow for kids, a kids program with games. This year we are staying farther North so we don’t need to rent a car or take a cab to town. Other than being so far out of town, and the fact that margaritas were so easy to get, we liked Iberostar.
