Country music fans: we don't agree on much, but

goddam if Sturgill Simpson isn’t one bad mofo. The instant I heard his voice I was beamed back in time to the cab of my daddy’s Mack truck, listening to Waylon Jennings, hauling through Tennessee in the dark of night.

Every song I’ve heard reinforces his brilliance. There’s hope for the genre yet.

For me, that’s the great thing about the genre. If you like the old schools stuff, there are performers for you. If you like the modern pop rock variety -check. If you like the bluegrass side or modern bluegrass - check.

Not familiar with the guy, but if there is no crying in the beer over the woman leaving and the pick up truck not starting then it just ain’t real C & W. I don’t mind some of the old classic C & W, but the line is blurred nowadays IMHO.

Have a Pandora station of his stuff. Brilliant indeed.
And how did I not know you were a Vol?

Jersey boy, not a Vol. Dad was a long haul trucker, used to take me on trips during summer break. Kentucky and Tennessee were frequent destinations.

Gotcha. He reminds me a lot of Hank, Jr.

Jersey boy

Ask sphere “What Exit?” and he says “All of 'em”

I’m also not a country music fan, at all. But I love Sturgill Simpson. Check out Jason Isbell as well. Similar to SS.

People ask me on occasion what I like to listen to, usually when they hear me listening to something unexpected, and my answer has always been, “pretty much anything but country.” I’ve actively disliked country music for the entirety of my adult life, even though I grew up on Kenny Rogers and Waylon Jennings. My father died when I was nine, and that was mostly the end of my exposure to the genre. I never heard a country song or singer that drew me back since, until I heard Sturgill Simpson. There isn’t one kind of country that he doesn’t do exceptionally well. Honky tonk stomp (You Can Have The Crown), trucker bait (Long White Line), soulful ballads (The Promise), and fusion (It Ain’t All Flowers), etc. etc.

The vocals are what really make him special (reference the 3:40 mark in The Promise). I could listen to him sing the alphabet or names from the phone book.

Also reminds me of Jamey Johnson.

Thanks for posting. I had not heard of Sturgill before. I really like his music and sound. I’m going to put him on my tracking list to catch him playing near me.

His vocals are outstanding, but I also think his lead guitar player is fantastic. Estonian guy with no roots in country music nails that old time country twang.

Two local Nashville boys! Isbell and his wife, Amanda Shire, are playing here two nights at the end of the month. That should be a good show. Strugis sold out two nights here at the end of February in short order.

Buy tickets fast if he is. Fallon had him on the Tonight Show and he’s selling tickets now like crazy.

I havent listened to Sturgill is he at all like Jamey Johnson? JJ is about the only country I can listen to myself. Kind of a throwback country singer as well.

Similar in that they both are kind of old school, “outlaw” country. SS seems to have a variety of tempo in his songs. His voice sounds similar to Haggard, Jennings with a more modern twist lyrically.

I am not a huge country fan at all really, but I do enjoy his music as well. I like all kinds of music though. It’s been a long time love of mine and I can appreciate talent in any genre.

Add another new favorite to my list. I heard Stapleton’s otherworldly voice on my Sturgill Simpson playlist (Google Music) and was blown away. Apparently he won Best Vocalist last night at the CMAs.

Thanks. Great stuff.

I haven’t listed to any of his other stuff, but that song is squarely in the blues category. Nothing to do with country.
