Costa Rica (San Jose) Cycling & Running?

We’re relocating to San Jose, Costa Rica and I’m trying to figure out how much (or all) of my cycling stuff to sell off before we leave.

Is it appropriate and/or safe to ride a bike as training in or near San Jose?

What about running roads or off-road trails?

NO as far as cycling. San Jose is a very Western city. As a matter of fact as you drive through town you will think you are in suburban America. PapaJohns on your left, grocery chain on the right and a 20plex movie theater directly ahead. However, riding a bike on those roads is tantamount to playing Frogger. In all my trips to CR I have always thought ‘damn would I love to rip through here for 5 hours on a bike’. Then an insane local rips by at 100 mph on two wheels and that ends that. The MTB riding is an option though…damn that could be epic. Trade in the road beast for an MTB!

Have you not been too/seen the place? La Ruta!!! The ultimate Mountain Bike race!! MTB For sure. The country has produced some world cup pros in MTB and Road I believe. A cross bike also might be in order along with a roadie for some epic climbs right n your back yard. I don’t know about the TT rig though. Do remeber seeing some rodies on the way up to one of the volcanos. The countless roadside memorials should give you an indication as to what your up against with the local traffic though. I also remeber seeing a new race announce ment for a big try in the northwest region listed on ST. Good luck and have fun!!!
