Cortisone shot - how long to kick in?

Aside from the debate about whether its a good idea or not - how long after getting a cortisone injection does it take for the pain to go away? When it does go away, is it instant_OR_does it fade away over days? weeks? So, for example if I got injected today (in my knee) would i have to wait 4 days? a week? less? What kind of time frame am i looking at here?? just planning out some timing here. thanks for the help.

My othropod told me it takes about three days to kick in.

I’ve had several in the knee and mine seems to feel better in a two to three days so I guess three is about right based on my experience

Depends if the corticosteroid is an acetate (not water soluable) or a phosphate (water soluable). There are mixtures too (like Celestone Soluspan). Plan on feeling the effects in 48-72 hours.

Good luck!

I had one (well two) once and I didn’t listen to the dr and not run on it the first time. About 4 weeks after I had it (and kept running) I was in the middle of a long run and it just seemed to suddenly wear off…I was in more pain than I was at first. I had to limp home. I couldn’t straighten my leg until I got another one (took some convincing the Dr this time I would actually listen to him…but I learned my lesson)…and this time I listened to the dr and didn’t run on it at all for 4 weeks.

I had mine in my shoulder, it felt better in 48 hours.

so if it takes 3 days, for example to kick in - did you just wake up one day and bam, its better? _OR_was the pain scale (1-10) like a 8 after one day, 6 after two days, then 4 after three until it just faded away and you didn’t notice… or was it just gone after it kickied in, – instantaneously almost???

one bump here.

focus here people…a brotha needs your help…KNEE - cortisone shot. If the pain is not 100% gone by 5 days after the shot, does that mean that the shot didn’t work??? even if the pain is less… and if so, will the pain continue to go away further after more time passes?

Sorry I couldn’t be of help. In my experience with another body part, it felt better, but I still had pain. Just not the “need narcotics, can’t sleep, taking 3 alleve at a time” pain, but pain never the less. I would imagine, there would be some physical therapy along with the shot.

I hope someone else responds for you.

I’d say this is the way mine has been except the pain never really has been something I didn’t notice even after cortisone. Cortisone just makes it something I can live with a little easier. I also get synvisc with the cortisone, then two more synvisc injections in the followiing weeks. I think the synvisc takes over about time the cortisone wears off and helps me keep the arthritis pain down for several more months but nothing seems to totally get rid it. Getting older really blows.

OR_was the pain scale (1-10) like a 8 after one day, 6 after two days, then 4 after three until it just faded away and you didn’t notice…
