As much as I love summer (and trust me, I do), I do get hot and sometimes the heat just wears me down. Up here in Ontario we only get few weeks of summer, so even if one loves the heat, there just isn’t enough time to fully get used to it.
So I started thinking about cooling vests.
Any experiences with them?
I’ve been using a Camelbak iceback, no longer made. Pain to put jersey on over this. Could you give us url examples of what you are using?.
I’ve never used one, and the idea is certainly interesting, so I wanted to see if there are any rec’s.
Camelbak made one a few years ago but only a few people have them. The reason I ask for url’s is that I’m not aware of any commercially available ones.
Don’t waste your time.
They have very limited effective usage.
Basically to keep elite athletes cool before a competition in HOT climates.
To actually train in one… I doubt it would be worth the extra encumbrance or hassle.
You want to get better in the heat?
- lose weight (if possible)
- train more (better conditioning makes you handle heat better)
- DON’T pour cold water on yourself (it actually makes you hotter)
Oh, not actually going to get one, I was just curious.
The first time I’ve come across them was during last (or was it the ones before?) Olympics, when they were used to keep athletes cool.
I thought by now there might have been some more advancements along the lines of cooling the body during exercise.

I also found this article on staying cool while running and they mention the Artic Heat ones…

Hi , I use RiteTemp Athletics Endurance cool vest . I live in Las Vegas and in the summer it’s 115 . Intil I got one I wouldn’t get a great workout in the heat. I sell them now. UFC are training in them now. Alll my Tri friends love them.
The Science Behind RiteTemp Athletics
By augmenting the body’s own thermal management systems, HTF Exotherm technology represents a bold new method for improving athletic capability and endurance. RiteTemp Athletics Products are specifically designed to utilize the principles of heat storage and transfer to compensate for hot or cold environments, leaving more of the body’s internal resources available for maximum physical output, rapid decision making and mental focus. RiteTemp Athletics products augment the body’s metabolic engine while maintaining an ergonomic profile that does not alter the fit or function of associated protective equipment.
Thermal regulation is the process of maintaining a consistent core body temperature against prevailing environmental conditions - the heat generated by metabolic activity, entrapment of heat by clothing or protective equipment and/or cold weather. The body reacts quickly to any imbalance in this equilibrium, because it must operate within a very narrow temperature range to maintain proper cellular function.
A minimal change in blood temperature triggers an immediate response as soon as it is detected the hypothalamus, a part of the brain linked to both the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system. Because thermal homeostasis is so critical, the body’s reaction time to maintain it is extremely quick.
When the body seeks to rid itself of excess heat, the hypothalamus triggers a heart rate increase and vasodilation (expansion of blood vessels) to increase blood flow in the outer layers of the skin, transferring heat much like the coolant flowing through a radiator. In contrast, when the body detects a drop in blood temperature it reduces blood flow in the outer layers of skin to trap heat within the body, and can even trigger unintended muscle movement - shivering as a way to generate metabolic heat.
In either case metabolic fuel, electrolytes and fluids - the same resources needed for peak physical performance - are redirected from the task at hand to maintaining a stable body temperature.

if I’m out for a long run I sometimes run into convenience stores and grab a handful of ice and put it in my bra.
I was watching a documentary the other night on Disney of all people.
They had a segment detailing the automotive stunt show, and the drivers were detailing their outfits.
Their base layer is a shirt/vest that is filled with radiant cooling gel, looks like radiant flooring piping. Seemed like a really cool idea.
B/c they are exposed to outrageous heat though, theirs might have been something that plugged in, ala anti-freeze.

Huh?
Remember, this is ST physics world where perpetual motion machines work and you lose weight by eating more food.
and you lose weight by eating more food.
Well, you CAN lose weight by eating the right kind of food. Any of the following can be great for weight loss:
Any food prepared by someone who does not use proper hand washing techniques
Any food prepared using cooking utensils, cutting boards, and other tools that are not fully cleaned
Dairy products and other foods that have sat out of the refrigerator too long
Frozen or refrigerated foods that are not stored at the proper temperature or are not reheated properly
Raw fish or oysters
Raw fruits or vegetables that have not been washed well
Raw vegetable or fruit juices and dairy (look for the word “pasteurized”)
Undercooked meats or eggs
Water from a well or stream, or city or town water that has not been treated
- DON’T pour cold water on yourself (it actually makes you hotter)
Huh?
I’m not sure what to think about this one either, lol

I remember seeing a study (and of course I can’t find it now ) about how warming up before an event with a chill-vest on gave something like an 13% increase in peak performance in runners, MOP I would guess. The reasoning was something to do with being able to increase the bloodflow to the muscles, prepping them for exhertion, while not allowing the core body temperature to rise above normal during the warmup. As core body temp increases, fatigue goes up - at least that’s what I’m assuming. It kind of ties in with what you said above…
