Cool weather early start- what to wear question

Hello All,

I have an Olympic this weekend in Santa Cruz and the high is going to be near 68 degrees, so it will be pretty chilly right after the swim. The first half of the bike is West into the wind, so I plan to put on a ‘dry’ tri top and arm warmers at T1.

What if anything should I wear under my wetsuit for the top (I will be wearing trishorts :)? If I wear something like a short sleeved asic run shirt, will the sleeves get all bunch up in the suit? Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Are you sure you didn’t mean 48 degrees? If I wore arm warmers in 68 degrees, I’d be pulling them off at mile 2. I would personally do nothing different at 68 (or even 58), and I’m a skinny cold weenie.

It will be ~60 out of the swim and I’ll use light weight arm warmers if needed.

Bigger concern is keeping chest/core warm the first 20 minutes and I think a dry shirt should help.

Gotcha. If you do plan to put on arm warmers in T1, realize how hard they are to get on wet arms. It helps to roll them up like donuts before the race, then in T1 get your wrist through the hole, and then unroll them up your arm.

What the hell is 68 degrees? Why are you not using the metric system?

Just a friendly nudge in the ribs from someone living in Europe.

Interestingly, I’ve probably only had 1-2 bike starts above 68F. You’ll be fine. If your body can’t keep things warm while racing in a 30km/h 60F wind, then you may have circulation issues.

Though if you really meant in the 40s F and you’re a guy, I’d recommend some extra layers in the pelvic region. I did a race a few weeks ago where it was in the 40s coming out of the water and my pelvic extremities got uncomfortably cold to the point I was sitting up trying to redirect air from that area. Everything else was kept warm by the effort of riding the bike though. Some friends said their feet got cold and it affected their run, so maybe extra socks as well.
