Here is the newb wrench question of the day.
Is it possible to convert a 2001 hardtail Specialized Rockhopper Comp into a CX bike?

how so?
that bike runs 26-inch wheels, so really i think you’re talking about slapping drop bars and skinny tyres on it.
in which case,
yeah!

I can’t remember where I read it, but I thought there may be a problem where a larger chainring (since no self-respecting CXer will run 3 rings on the front) may run into the wider chainstay on a MTB. I guess each frame will be different and I will just have to play with parts until they fit if that is the case.
A lot of the CX races in my area (maybe all??? I don’t race CX) allow you to use a MTB so you might not have to do any conversion if you just want to get out there and race. Not sure I’d bother trying to do a full conversion on an old heavy MTB. I’m sure the conversion is possible, just might not be very cost effective.
Easy solution to that, which I did on my most recent bike, but in my case starting with a 29er frame. Just run a double crankset on a triple BB (you have to use older crank designs for this, I used octalink-compatible cranks), or, if running newer integrated crank designs, get a full triple crankset and then just pull off the inner chainring.
Off topic, I sent you a message via your website, are you still doing web design?
I put drop bars on an old mountain bike as a commuter. I love it as a one speed fat tired road bike. Mine had canti brakes so I just had to get a cable hanger for the front. If you have V-brakes it may be more complicated as the standard road lever doesn’t pull enough cable. There are some devices on the market to make it work.
