I’m no wrench, but I am considering buying a 2005/06 9speed roadie and then converting it to modern 10 speed ultegra. is this a bad idea? is it straight forward? is there something i am overlooking that makes this a bad idea?
If it’s not a bad idea can you help me make a list of what i need…
crank
cassette
chain
new cables
STI shifters
what about rear wheel/hub? Will i need a new one?
All you NEED is the right (rear) shifter, cassette, and chain.
the 9spd rear deraileur will work with ten speed - it’s the rear shifter that’s the ‘brains’ of the operation. the shifter ‘tells’ the deraileur how much cable to let out/how far to move.
you need the new chain to accomodate the new cassette spacing.
crank, FD, left shifter will all work just fine with 10spd.
i should add that i want to do this “right” i don’t just want it ti work, i want it to work flawlessly…so i guess i’ll go the whole way w/ new derails and all, agreed?
Here’s a kit I’ve been eyeballing for $465 that has all the needed parts. I haven’t shopped around yet so not sure if you can get the stuff somewhere else cheaper.

McKenzee is right. It will work flawlessly just by changing right shifter, chain, cassette.
However, I would like to offer up for your consideration my opinion that 9 speeds will do you just fine. I’m not really convinced that moving to 10 speeds was that beneficial (except to the bike companies).

you may be right, however i’d like the whole set up to be compatible with my 10 speed tri bike.

Same here. I like to swap wheelsets back and forth.
