Big Island residents (those residing there for 3 years or more) will continue to receive the opportunity to capture a qualifying slot for the 2004 World Championship without leaving the island. Additionally, plans are being made to accommodate those Hawaiian athletes not residing on the big island. WTC will release an official statement within the next 30 days outlining further details and finalize the 2004 qualifying events calendar. Athletes outside of the state of Hawaii hoping to qualify for the 2004 World Championship at the Keauhou Kona Triathlon should plan to register for another event that is still accepting applications. All races outside North America are open to general entry.
KKT has had the fact that it was unsure if it was going to receive qualifying spots since the very beginning of registration for 2004. Every athlete who registered took the chance that KKT may not be a qualifier.
KKT is still a great race without the slots and will continue to fill every year. Although I’m not a big island athlete, I hope they work it out to still be a big island qualifier. Any race of lesser quality or distance wouldn’t be proper.
