Consumer Reports id / Vacuum recommendations

Well, our vacuum died a sad death. I used to have a consumerreports.org id, but it’s expired. I’d rather not sign back-up to pick a vacuum. Can anyone help out with either a consumerreports.org id and password I can ‘borrow’ for the morning, or a vacuum recommendation. We have both hardwood and carpet; my wife isn’t into uprights, but I’m no fan of canisters.

Thanks!

Dave

I’ve got a Dyson. They make tons of models, and it’s great. A little pricey compared to some others, but worth it in my view. I have a cat, and it takes up pet hair with no problem, and does both carpet and flooring.

Yeah, we’ve got two cats and three kids. We borrowed our neighbor’s Dyson the other day (to finish vac’ing when ours died). I love it, but my wife isn’t too hip to it. Plus, we’re really not looking to blow $500 on a vac. More like under $300.

Where’s the Kirby guy when you need him?

I don’t have a consumer reports id, but I’ll throw another vote out there for the Dyson. Mrs. Vitus bought a remanufactured Dyson on Demerly’s recommendation, and she loves it. It was considerably less expensive than a new one, and works just as well. We have a dog and a cat, as well. (I used it the other day to vacuum up a bunch of cat food, actually. Works great.

If you can spare the coin, I highly recommend a Miele vacuum. German made, works awesome, you can carry on a whisper conversation with the thing running right next to you. You can get a nice model for under $1,200

I just bought a refurbished Dyson DC14 Animal from Amazon. It was $329.99 and IT IS WORTH EVERY FREAKING PENNY. Sorry to yell. I have seriously never been so enthused about a piece of household equipment in my life - not even the KitchenAid stand mixer. My husband and I arm wrestle over who gets to use the vacuum and that NEVER happens. It’s amazing. We have two cats and live in the desert with a natural-landscaped yard, so lots of dirt and other yard stuff gets tracked in in addition to all the cat hair. There is also the issue of crunched up Cheerios in the carpet from the kid. Every time we use the thing I swear we get out enough cat hair to build another cat.

My vote is for a refurbed Dyson. It looked brand-new out of the box, was relatively easy to assemble, is extremely quiet, easy to maneuver, and a cinch to empty.

My Hoover bagless vac seems to do the job pretty well. I have no carpets in my current place, but I do have a few rugs, upholstery, and my old place had carpet in the bedroom. It seemed to work well.

I second the Miele, but we paid way less than $1200 for ours 3 or 4 years ago. Only around $300 as I remember. After several trips to the local repair shop to have a couple of vacuum cleaners repaired, they guy said “why don’t you just buy a Miele?” My wife took his advice, and we’ve been happy ever since. Quiet, reliable, good suction, and uses “normal” bags that you can buy just about anywhere. It’s also pretty light weight, so my wife doesn’t have any problem carrying it up & down the stairs (we live in a quad level).

One NEVER needs the Kirby guy.

Weaselgrl has a cat and a dog. She bought a Dyson (display model from Home Depot) that was out of the box for only $300 and it works GREAT. I don’t get enthused about vacuums but this is a product that actually delivers on all the marketing hype.

Also recommend the Miele
