I’d go with red bar tape and a Fizik Arione black seat with the red stripe down the middle. Should tie nicely with the red on the shifters and rear derailler and bike. Little more flare than a murdered out all black bike.
My rule of thumb is to amtch the tape to the downtube decals…
That said, if you sued white, it would pull in the Reynolds decals and unify the bike a bit.
I would also investigate getting red hoods for the brifters. that would be a nice touch, IMO and bring a bit a red into it. Top it off with a black saddle with red accents…like a black Fizik with a red stripe down the middle or something similar. edit rroof beat me to it!

I’m not sure I follow. You mean red on the edges at the bar end, near the hoods and at the ends toward the stem? Or, is there a bar tape that is predominantly black and has a red edge all the way along it?
yep you can get bar tape with a red edge to it, I think its fizik, you can also get one by cinelli thats red and black blothcy looks cool in my view on a simple bike but is pretty wild so may not be everyones cup of tea.
The fellow is talking about the Fizik Dual Microtex tape. I have the black red and absolutely love it. It’s a different texture than the normal microtex and has a little bit of give to it… very comfy.
BUT. The way you are ‘supposed’ to wrap this tape makes your bike look like a rolling barber pole/ Santa’s workshop with the red stripes all over your bars. Very ugly and gaudy IMO.
Folks in the know will take this tape and wrap it backwards, so the red stripe only peeks out at the brifters. Then you get all black tape with the red stitching showing through. Very classy. Finish off your wrap job with a couple of passes of red electrical tape and you’ll get this effect:
I also geeked out and painted by handlebar plugs red (leaving the ‘:k’ black) for a nice finishing touch.
Cuz they were 50% off on Bonktown, which is a theme with this bike. All of the red gruppo was from Bonktown @ 50% off. The handlebars were from Bonktown at more than 50% off. The wheels … the same. It’s a Bonktown build. I could have gotten the Red cassette from Bonktown too, if I had noticed. Oh, the cranks are from Bonktown, but those aren’t brand new. They’re the only carry over. The brakes and pedals aren’t Bonktown, but the pedals were discounted on Ebay. I paid full price for the brakes. I purchased the frame from Competitive Cyclist from their frame sale listings; I bought it from CC before they were purchased by Backcountry/RealCyclist/Bonktown.
