Does that stand for something by the way? SOMA?
Anyway, considering doing this race as my last of the '05 season (it would be my 10th race since May). What can anyone tell me about it that would help me make a decision? RD says there are less than 200 spots left.
199 spots left. I signed up today.
The course has been changed from last year. Way more turns than last year so it’ll be different for sure. Fun race though.
Thanks MW. What’s fun about it? Seems like a flat course with 3 bike loops. Doesn’t sound too “scenic”.
It definitely wasn’t scenic last year, but it was fun because it was fast. I did a 5:08 last year and hope to break 5 this year. I just had a great weekend is why I say it was fun.
This year, there will be about 6-8 of us heading up together from San Diego.
It’s definitely flat. It’ll be interesting this year because of all the turns. And last year it was 2 laps, so…
It’s a good way to end the season, too. I guess it really comes down to if you want to race or not? I thought it was a good fun event. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes after they hosted IMAZ last year.
Soma is Greek for “body”. What context are you using it in?
I say it’s expensive, am I correct? $170
I think because I was there! I second, it’s a great race and Tempe is a fun town! I’m signed up as well!!
Exactomondo!! Because KK was there.
Looks like a fun group heading up. Sonja, Deb, Anna, Brian Miller?, maybe Kat if I can talk her into it.
I know none of those people, but I trust they are fun!
a soma is the body of a nerve cell, that is the portion that contains the nucleus, but not the axon or dendrites… or you might be talking about something else.
I’m in again this year, I just got my flight from Chicago down there at the beginning of the week. Its a good race, and not too crowded. Dunno what the bike course is going to be like except a lot of turns, so the map says on the webpage.
Hopefully this achilles tendonitis will go away so I can actually run the course instead of a nice leisurely stroll
Soma was the euphoric drug used in Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” as a way to let the elderly waste away their final years until they died.
Lots of peeps heading out from SD. I’ll be headed out too. They might have to move the race over here next year!
When is everyone headed out, we should have a Slowtwitch SD-region gathering to ride the course and/or swim the lake. I’m driving over Wed night, heading back on Monday.

We have at least 6 going from a bike shop in So Cal. If anyone was thinking about a get together there is an outstanding pizza place in Chandler. I know I could get there and find it in a phone book but I do not remember the name offhand. Any locals know which pizza place I am talking about?
I thought you were asking about the muscle relaxer. I use it/love it. ZZZZ
One of the most professionally run races that I have experienced. I beleive the RD’s are part of the team that organized IMAZ. Great weather, Tempe is a fun town, and the course is fast.
SOMA is a restaurant (www.somacafe.com) and title sponsor of the event.
Growing up in Phoenix, I had lots of swim meets at ASU. The only pizza place I remember was right down the street. Moma’s. Great Italian food. Unfortunatly, last time I was there, it was closed and replaced by something else. I wonder if my name is still carved in the wall there. At least the Chuckbox is still open!!!
Not sure what the name of the pizza place is in Chandler. I will ask my brother, he is going to school at ASU right now and should know all the good “hole-in-the-wall” places to eat.

---- Nello’s ----- the best pizza in the east valley!
Ahhh, the Chuckbox! Lots of pitchers consumed there back in the day. Worked at the Wherehouse that used to be across the street…drank a few there as well.
