Conservative Democrats

Is there such a thing anymore? Are we really Rebublicans not willing to switch parties? And will we ever have a national candidate we can vote for again?

**Are we really Rebublicans not willing to switch parties? **

Yes

**will we ever have a national candidate we can vote for again? **

Sure, as long as he is a white Christian male who says he is fiscally Conservative and supports tax cuts for the wealthy, opposes reductions in the military budget and most importantly, loves freedom.

"Are we really Rebublicans not willing to switch parties? "

Yes, because the parties are only about hating each other now.

The next mainstream fiscally conservative, socially liberal candidate (from either party) will win the damn general election in a landslide. For all the talk that the media does about how important the independents are, no one seems to give a damn about actually catering to them. The party primaries just absolutely ruin the process in many cases.

Booyah! I’d jump on that wagon. The left and right radicals are running this country into the ground.

Name one piece of social legislation that has been passed and implemented from the right radicals in the last 20 years?

I pretty much agree, I would have considered myself a fiscally conservative and socially liberal, but I not sure I can get on the socailly liberal bandwagon anymore as it has moved too far left in the last 15-20 years. I think it started with Clinton. Prior to that I was a liberal. So i guess i need middle of the road for social issues too.

With the understanding that social legislation is undertaken in response to social problems… are you saying that the right radicals haven’t responded to any of the United States’ social problems of the last 20 years?

I consider most pubs far right, most of them share traditional southern Christian ideologies. Very few break from their collectivism mentality. Same goes for the liberals.

Medicare Part D from GWB was a huge, unfunded bonehead move. With that being said, social legislation isn’t the only thing that’s got us going in the wrong direction. How about two wars from the right war hawks, one of which 99.9% of the world agrees was completely unjustified, or massive unfunded tax cuts that primarily benefit the upper income households?

IMO, the far right is now mainstream right, and the far left is now mainstream left. There’s very few true moderates in DC.

Medicare D was a liberal move not a conservative move (Bush was a moderate, a true conservative would not have expanded an entitlement). Not sure how you can equate a war with southern Christian ideologies or tax cuts with the same.

And can we please stop using this word “unfunded” tax cuts. It makes a nice soundbite but it really silly. I just don’t see any social issues that have been hindered in my adult lifetime ( I am 47)…I see a black man as President, I see laws meant to protect different minority groups, I see a tax code where half the country doesn’t pay in. I see the left going radical and I see the right (in general) not doing anything different just going slower than the left.

Stem cell research ban.

Did they ban stem cell research, or just ban the spending of taxpayer dollars on stem cell research?

No, I think adult stem cells are on the table and the research is promising…and if this was such a rightie issue, why didn’t the left push for it in the two years that the Dems ruled the world?

Probably because the president lifted the ban almost immediately after taking office.

Thanks for correcting me and for the information and making my point…my point being that over time, the social issues go the more liberal way and will continue to do so. The so called wacko righties and Christian right can’t change any social agenda.

Kind of a misnomer there. GWB stopped funding for new, embryonic, stem cell lines. He did not stop federal funding for existing embryonic lines or any adult lines. You could certainly say that he made the decision based on a right-wing desire to not encourage abortions, but from what I've read over the last years, research has not been slowed down.

To the OP; I think we, and the media, make the mistake of thinking America is polarized. The right and left are louder voices within each party right now, but I think there's probably 15 - 20% on each side of the aisle that would cross-over depending on the particular flavor of the moderate candidate. Hell, had he stayed with a competent, centrist, VP, McCain may very well have beaten Obama, and that was in the midst of massive Bush hatred, and general dissatisfaction in the country.

The so called wacko righties and Christian right can’t change any social agenda.

That’s simply untrue. Both parties can and do affect those changes. Look no further than the current anti-abortion climate. The 2010 elections facilitated the most anti-choice legislation since the passage of Roe v. Wade.

Yet abortion mills running full steam…Roe v Wade won’t be reversed, don’t worry. Come on Sphere, just when I think you have somehow defined some middle ground you let your hatred for the religious right cloud your judgement. But then again, f.e.a.r. wins elections

What in god’s name are you talking about, clouded judgment? Do a quick search for changes in abortion laws over the last year or so. There’s been a near seismic shift in restrictions and prohibitory regulations, since the Republican resurgence last year. My home state alone is slated to shut twenty-something facilities due to regulatory initiatives designed for the very purpose.

that would be the TRex of politicians. A fierce competitor. We have been told they roamed the earth long ago but are now extinct.
