Congrats to musselman (Jeff Henderson) on his recent media exposure

I was first introduced to Jeff a few years back, as I ran in the inaugural edition of the Musselman. We exchanged several emails and his event was first-rate. Great race, superb organization (even though it was the first year), and Jeff’s whimsical sense of reality shines through continually in all his emails (including his most recent April Fool’s joke of the Seneca Epic, which looks like it may end up being an actual event).

Jeff’s always taken an innovative approach to making his races as sustainable as possible as well as drawing on local resources. So much so that it appears he’s the executive director of the Council for Responsible Sport. Nice organization, and some great press for his work today in Tennesse (saw the article as I’m living here for the next few months): http://www.tennessean.com/article/20090404/GREEN02/904040308/1004/FEATURES

Nice work, friend.

I used to race with a 50 oz camelback fanny pack and would never stop at aid stations. I’m not sure I want to go back to using the fanny pack during races but I would gladly give up the post race water bottle and T-shirt. I could envision racing with a fuel belt and filling the bottles up at an aid station that had large tubs of water. The amount of cups wasted is pretty obscene I must admit.

I was at Musselman the first year they had the bamboo shirts, I don’t know if it is just me but when those bamboo shirts get wet, they smell a bit too earthy for my taste.

As for Seneca epic, I love the concept, especially in that you have to be totally self sufficient. Perhaps the race can be a reality in 2010?

I agree. We need more race directors like Jeff. Puts on a first rate event and his dedication to sustainability is to be admired.
